garyb
Chaps.. I notice a lot of you like to set your centrefire's up, with a 1inch high @ 100yd zero. Can someone answer the following for me.. If i'm pushing 3200ft/s velocity with a 55grn head (.224), with a 1 inch high @ 100yd zero Where is my POI at say.. 1 - 25 Yards 2 - 50 Yards 3 - 200 Yards ? A linky to an online based calc to show this would be most helpful. Edited October 9, 2009 by garyb

Doggone
http://www.norma.cc/javapage_US2.asp?Lang=2 This is the best ballistics programme I've seen. It lets you define your own bullet and everything is interactive Andy
wymberley
Gary, OK, here we go; rounded to one decimal place. 25yds is -0.9", 50 is 0.0(exact) , 200 is -0.4. Zero range is 190 yards. Information from Sierra Infinity Suite Ballistic Programme. Cheers

wymberley
Stuart, Of course, mate. A pleasure. Give me a minute or two. Cheers Ok, 25 is -1.2", 50 is -0.5" and 200 is -2.4" Cheers Edited October 9, 2009 by wymberley
garyb
Cheers Wymberley.. So it does seem 1inch high @ 100yrds is ideal for a foxing setup Hmmm
wymberley
Cheers Wymberley.. So it does seem 1inch high @ 100yrds is ideal for a foxing setup Hmmm Yep, you're never more than 1.2" (120yds) off zero out to the 200yds. Cheers PS, Perhaps should have added that your figures and those for Stuart assume a 2" sight height. Beardo
what's the first zero point then?
wymberley
what's the first zero point then? Assuming , Nick, you mean for Stuart, having already given Gary's. You're not going to believe this; I didn't until I amended the sight height to verify the programme hadn't dumped. The first zero is the only zero, ie 100. cheers

Beardo
i do hope you're not talking about me! there must be 2 points where the POI is zero surely? (not 1" high - which sounds like the height of the arc) first one being somewhere around 75yards at a guess Edited October 9, 2009 by nickbeardo
tungsten
I have mentioned this previously, but it's a fantasic program, so much so I have noticed the price has increased from when I purchased it so must have a lot of takers. Unfortunately its on the iphone as an application, but it's portable! BALLISTIC.

garyb
Fitted a new Swaro 8x56 to the .223 earlier today, and with perfect windless & still, zeroing conditions I took the rifle out for a bit of a play after work. 1st pic is whilst zeroing... 5 shots - the 1st four we're all within a 5 pence piece at 100yards, before I worked out the Swaro windage turrets , hence the 5th shot to the left. 2nd pic shows 3 shots at 0.8 of an inch high, followed by a single shot at bang on 2 inch low from 200 yards.... I'll reload some more, and test with the range finder etc, but I'm happy enough with that for now Watch out Mr Todd

allthegearandnoidea
This is probably a really stupid question but what does 1" high at 100 yards actually mean? Is it that the bullet impacts 1" above the point you aim at 100 yards?
garyb
That's the one.
allthegearandnoidea
Can I then ask why people do this. I have always zeroed the rifle so that the bullet would hit where I am aiming. Is that wrong?
garyb
I use my 223 almost purely for fox work. With a 1 inch high @ 100 yard zero, I know that I can point and shoot foxes in the boiler room from 25 to 200 yards. With a dead 100 yard zero, you'd need to estimate hold over / under at the varying ranges
al4x
only just though Gary the boiler rooms quite a big target for an inch or two difference if you really mis judge the distance, so who's the one thats been shooting them up the **** :whistle
