  1. OK, Guys, Im getting ready to duck, but I have a feeling it won't be necessary. Is there anyone else out there who is starting to think that some retailers believe they need to do virtually nothing to relieve you of your hard earned cash. I'm speaking generally, but the last straw was a RFD. He is advertising a gun that very few - very few - people would want. If it was me and anyone showed any interest at all, I'd be all over them like a rash to shift it. I sent an e-mail asking him to clarify two points on the advert, tell me a bit about the gun and also commented that I'd noted the main dealer status on another product and asked if he had so and so in stock. Now, we're talking a possible purchase of a grand+ here. The reply? "The two items are as detailed". End of. If it was an OU shotgun, made in Italy and with a name something like Berrota, I could understand if I'd have asked if it had two barrels and was it a well known make. No, it was a well known make but the model, which I'd never heard of, went out of production years ago and having tried, can't find a picture of and to wrap it up the final letter of the model code was missing so it was impossible to accurately identify. Sorry, chum, but I worked hard over the years to earn that pension which I would have used to pay you and I expect a little effort from you. A Divine right to anything is reserved for someone a bit higher up the food chain. Rant over. Cheers
  2. Time you got that FAC then, innit? Happy New Year.
  3. Rick, hello. Good on you, mate. The next time you go swanning off, I'll come to see you off just to make sure that YOU have everything that WE need. Enjoy the rest of your jaunt. Cheers, Phil Edit:spell/type error
  4. OK, no problem, I'll agree to differ although I simply don't know how you know what I get up to or what dimension my critcal zone, target species and zeroing distance are. Cheers
  5. Hi, Devon here. My renewal bumph arrived as usual 3 months in advance and promptly actioned by myself and the FEO. Finally got them several days late but, I suspect, only because I rang the HQ. I had previously rang the FEO (who has an outstation office away from the HQ) who said don't worry, it's not your problem, don't bother doing anything about it, the whole system is in chaos! The point I really wanted to make though, is that if you look at the locations of the Posts, this situation appears to be pretty much nation-wide.
  6. Hi, As I understand it, about 0.030". Cheers
  7. Sounds to me as though it was just "run in" before you started messing about with it! Cheers
  8. Gary, good question! These are no good if you're thinking of fiddling with the standard nominal case lengths (except, perhaps, to shorten them) as the are made to that dimension (isn't 308 2.015?). The trim length guide is interchangeable for the various calibres so only one cutter is needed. Cheers
  9. Hi, Unless you're thinking of matching Winchester for production output, this is ideal. Once you've got the cases trimmed accurately, it's just a second or two to do per reload. Cheers
  10. Hi, For me, quite often the two are the same in practical terms. Cheers
  11. Hi, Re Post #3. You asked for rough and I think you've probably got it - my programme is running at/beyond its limits so am happy to be corrected. Velocity is c70ft/sec and although, for energy, the programme dumps at 150yds with 0.1ft/lbs, I calculate from the 70, energy is c0.02ft/lbs. Cheers
  12. Hi, ABOUT 225 yds. A good rule of thumb empirical answer is, 1500 divided by cube root of N where N is the number of pellets/oz. This is valid for all of the commonly used game shot sizes. Striking force is dependent upon muzzle velocity (but not as much as you'd think), pellet weight and ballistic coefficient. The first 2 are easily found and for your N0. 6, the BC is 0.00955. Not feeling too clever at the moment (can't seem to concentrate - shingles) but no doubt someone will run the figures through a ballistic programme for you just out of interest. Cheers
  13. Hi, When zeroing, you really don't want to see the holes until you've finished shooting whatever group size (number of shots) that you're using. Hence the well known saying, "chasing the error". Cheers
  14. Hi, Being somewhat cynical, one has to ask which calibre did the gun dealer have on the shelf? It will be obvious from the posts that the 223 is more popular than the Hornet which will therefore be more difficult to shift. So, if anyone were to darken the door and ask for one and there was one in stock gathering dust, all of a sudden twice as many advantages of owning one would be immediately offered as compared to the 223. Suits you, Sir! Cheers
  15. Hi, Don't shoot owt that big any more, so wait for someone to confirm, but from memory that was the proof for the 23/4" (70mm) "magnum" cartridge when your gun was made. Cheers
  16. Neil, Good man, thanks very much - couldn't find it on their website. Cheers, Phil
  17. Hi, guys. Neither cartridge nor shell and not head but BULLET.
  18. CBF, hi. I am just starting the second month with a really nasty bout of shingles. Does this annoy me? No! Does the fact that you are Stateside looking at rifles, especially Savage annoy me? You better flamin' well believe it! The model 25 LVT is 43.75" long. How big is your suitcase? Don't need anything more powerful than the Hornet and it's therefore cost effective especially as my shooting oppo already has one (Anschutz, and that has also disappeared from the current product list!). Cheers, Rick and enjoy your trip. Phil
  19. Hi, guys, If anyone has any could they be so good as to post the over all length? Many thanks in advance. Cheers, Phil
  20. Rick, hi. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a mess; knees shot, back long gone and ticker beats as regular as Ringo on a bad acid trip. I can only shoot standing up or sitting if supported and do much better if the rifle has some weight to counteract my tendency to kind of wobble. This is fine as apart from carrying it out of the house, all I have to do is lift it from the cab onto the roof of the truck. There is nowt wrong with any of the rifles that you mention but I really need some weight (and yep, the Browning was pushing it), for example, I currently shoot Tikka T3 Stainless Varmint. Yep, I know about the Calhoon - in fact It may have been you who told me about it in the first place. Not withstanding the weight, this option makes the CZ my backstop. If I can't get the Model 40, I'm hoping all my engineering skills haven't deserted me and I can make a drop in follower for the Model 25 LV-T. All this fuss because along with a few others (who are way in front of me but I'm catching up fast having been introduced to the product manager at Hodgdon Powders), I have discovered what the Hornet can REALLY do if one can overcome the problem of COL with regard to magazine dimensions. Cheers, Rick, and thanks for your input. Phil
  21. Mike, hi. Thanks, mate; you may have just saved me quite a few £100s. Although I still wasn't convinced, I've picked up a couple more opinions since my last post and was heading in the Browning direction, partly because, as you say, they really are a superb looking piece of fit - photo's don't do them justice. However your timely post, another website I found and the fact that there's some slight but ne'er-the-less costly modifications required to bring it our UK idea of a fox shooting rifle, I'm going back to plan B. Re the load development, I've come to a temporary stop. I know I can get 1.950" in the Anschutz and Browning chambers. To carry on playing, I needed some lil gun, which I'm waiting for and a rifle - my FAC arrived on Xmas Eve with the hornet added and although I offered to get rid of the 22WMR and the 223 in exchange, thet're happy for me to keep them as well. Now with the hornet slotted in, I can get serious with the RFD. The problem now is, damnit, Plan A has hit a brick wall. Just as the change of UK distributorship appeared on the Savage website, the only hornet they make, model 40 and which was a single action, disappeared from their product range! Just my luck! However, all is not lost as they have now added the hornet to another varmint range but this has no single shot option. Consequently, plan B is the RFD is getting a P&D on the new Savage model and also querying the chance of still getting hold of a model 40. Once I've got all the gear and assuming the Savage chamber is on a par (ish) with the Anschutz and Browning, I'm reasonably sure that without being stupid 3000ft/sec with a 40gr Nosler BT is perfectly feasible and although COL may be a problem, going to have a look at a 50 Vmax of equivalent energy. Again, Mike, many thanks, Cheers, Phil
  22. Hi, and Merry Christmas. Goose is good, but if it's one that you, or a friend who did and gave it to you, shot, then it's best cooked by the "a la Elgin" method Cheers
  23. They prefer to speak with their dealers. Google "cz rifles uk" and pick the first entry - Northallerton. Cheers
  24. Thanks, mate. Yep didn't word that at all well did I? Have since got hold of the "new" Browning people and although they were able to date it from the serial no., their available info. only goes back 5 years. Cheers
