1- a good point I hadn’t even considered 🤔but it will be a picking up dog that should keep it away from any idiots or at least you’d think so! But the darker colour is exactly the sort I’m wanting 🙈 I will have to be extra careful of the company I shoot with I guess and to make sure it’s stay close to me unless retrieving 2- yes I know they’re not recognised as a colour of their own more a shade of the yellow but you knew what I meant.

I do yes. approx. 30cm in length and about 15-20cm across the widest part, then id have the widest part as the back end and the "Arrow point" on a stick in the ground just slightly shorter than the 30cm length. then as the breeze reaches it, it will freely bounce and move around. I found they work best in big dense patterns and crows used to come in very readily. I was once shown the trick by an old farmer who had trouble with crows on his standing maze, I would've been about 14 at the time and he whipped up half a dozen of these stuck them in the actual maze stem so it hovered above the standing crop and left me to it with a few boxes of carts. If I remember correctly I shot steadily all day with around 80 ish in the bag and have had a good few 100+ bags this way since that so definitely works!

Yes all the litters I have found have been sold off waiting list apparently! As for travel I won’t mind going anywhere in England Scotland wales or Ireland for the right dog end of the day it’ll be a 10-14year long companion so what’s a bit of travel to get it, lockdown allowing 😂. I’ll just stick at the search and put my name down at some kennels with them I guess. Thanks for the help.

Hi there, so due to very unfortunate circumstances I have had to take my dog out of the action, prematurely, as of last year and I really have my heart set on finding a new shooting buddy. I really like the idea of a proper working, dark fox red lab pup and want a bitch not dog. Any on here have any experience or any ideas where I might be able to find one or indeed any experience of them in general? does colour really make any odds to capability (I cant see how but you may know more!)? any good websites to keep an eye on for some coming available? thanks in advance

Thanks for all the comments guys. Just a small justification here- I can assure you that a very small (<5 I’d say) percentage of the birds shot that afternoon required humane dispatch. Most were either clean miss or clean kill and many of those shot as you should be able to tell in the video from the reactions of the birds were actually head shot. Even that very last bird- which was shot whilst out of the hide picking the bird shot before it, was actually stone dead when I walked over to it directly after the shot admittedly it didn’t look a clean shot but clearly in the time it took the bird to hit the floor it had expired so how bad Could the shot have been. Yes there are a couple birds that came down hard hit but not dead and those were retrieved as soon as they hit the floor and despatched as is only right to do so. As for a dog- I have one that was a cracking gundog but unfortunately and very quickly she went blind with a hereditary defect unknown to me obviously and as such she is no longer a working dog which has left me with a gap that I am considering trying to fill sooner rather than later with a pup but then that’ll take time to train and mature so for the meantime I am dogless which is admittedly not ideal. Please read this the right way as I actually quite like getting everyone’s different views on the videos positive or constructive criticism, and welcome them all so please keep them coming! But I just wanted to try shed some light on the background of the video to answer some of the concerns in the convo hopefully the videos will carry on improving to be able to show this beyond doubt without explanation- I’ll get there haha for now please keep on enjoying the videos 👍🏼Sorry for the essay!

Appreciate what you are saying and on a day when the birds come right into the pattern I’d perhaps even agree. Most of the birds shot that afternoon were dead when I picked them, and I don’t leave it long between clear ups in order to keep a tidy pattern. I appreciate its very difficult if not impossible to gauge range on the shots with the shotkam (something I will be remedying in my videos from now on I hope if my idea works!) but most birds were on the furthest edge of the decoys or further as they wouldn’t turn into my intended killzone- meaning most were shot at a range where I personally don’t feel comfortable with 7s (and I used to shoot with them a lot) however I appreciate everyone has their thoughts on loads and chokes and indeed different things work for different shooters. I think if anything I may possibly look for a bigger payload cartridge in the future (32gram used to be my choice years ago) but I do find the pigeon power a good compromise between the all important cost and performance for now. Hi thanks was a brilliant day. Ive got a (very old) berretta silver pigeon which I have 3/4 chokes in both barrels and was putting lyalvale power pigeon 29g 6's through it (my cartridge of choice atm) 👍

The afternoon to my last video the crows stopped coming as it neared lunchtime and within an hour the pigeons started ( well a few crows continued but nowhere near as regular) Pigeons were offering some testing targets with many coming from out of the sun and plenty more that were just too good for me but I got my fair share. Have a watch hopefully something to whet your appetites until the lockdown is over. Had a nightmare editing this one so excuse any mistakes they're all intentional of course just like my misses 😅 hope you enjoy it all the same. Thanks for watching and stay safe guys 👍

+1used to use the black bale wrap and id put a BIG pattern out (think 30-40 triangles of plastic on sticks one corner being the head ) used to put them fairly tight together around a foot between them and I shot literally hundreds of crows over them on silaged fields. especially effective in a bit of breeze at first light but that's not to say the crows wont hover in the breeze just a couple foot above them looking for landing space all day. Don't always need expensive kit!

Out of responsibility take price out of the decision to be made by the everyday shooter. I never said they would have to drop price of fibre. How they match the two prices would be open to them there is more than one way

No arguments here bud. I’ve used plastics for pretty much all my shooting life but I think myself it’s perhaps time to move over to fibres. I ordered these carts due to lockdown and didn’t even think but I will look into the next lot I buy switching to the same cartridges but fibre- we’ve all got to do our bit at the end of the day 👍🏼 Think the manufacturers should perhaps consider making plastic and fibre same price too rather than a premium for fibres to do their bit too

I’m putting together the second half of the day and would appear to have started connecting more towards front edge of the birds as the day went on. But I will definitely try pull out on them a little bit more Thanks for the tip! 👍🏼 I haven’t done much shooting In the last couple years only the odd day or two here and there so I’d like to think I’m just a bit rusty. hope it gets sorted sounds a living nightmare. I cant stand one of my neighbours and within a couple months wed had a very open talk ended in just agreeing that its best not to have anything to do with each other and from then just pretty much ignore each other. luckily no such antics as you are describing as I fear id no longer be a free man if someone drove at my missus or damaged my cars!

I welcome all comments (within reason haha) not one to be too readily offended or anything, as I'm just starting out with these videos the feedback is proving really useful! Hopefully it will end up with my being able to make a decent ongoing series of the sport that will provide a good little bit of entertainment for likeminded people but I am all too aware of the saying "you can't please everyone" and tbh I was expecting to get more stick for my abilities with both camera and gun 🤣 I will try to improve with the filming next time im out purchased a small tripod for the normal camera so will try get that to work a bit better next time as an example. Never know perhaps this year will be the one I've been waiting for when my shooting improves hahah. Thanks for watching. Much of this footage particularly around the shots is still at a fraction of real-time speed. I don't think I've ever been said to linger on a target but I guess that's all perspective and would be different when relative to different people so compared to you perhaps I do? I had never known nor thought about my technique or style of shooting still don't tbh it as I believe it would play on the mind too much when shooting if I did but having gotten the shotkam it has shown me a lot that I never knew was going on in terms of gun speed and perceived lead used on targets that at the time is all done subconsciously I guess! Genuine question but in a let’s say 100bird day decoying how many if any birds would you expect to hit but not come down at the shot? And how many shots on an average would you reckon to fire on such a day? I understand you are probably a much better shot than myself hence the question to try figure out a good average. Thanks for the comment anyway. Yes I prefer the camera footage but it’s very difficult on your own and with limited resources but I will endeavour to improve as I go. edit to say on this day I picked 123 from initial pattern area and 5more from trees about 200m away so 128picked without a dog from a bag of 138

I remember as a kid probably 14 id think don't know where we had been but me and dad had called in to a chippy on a late summer afternoon sat on a top of a hill overlooking a stubble eating our lunch quickly before we were meant to be somewhere. Across the field we spotted what unknown to us was a magnet being used by someone decoying perhaps 150-200 meteres away. we thought looking at it how much it caught the eye and a few pigeons committed straight to it that matey despatched. fast forward a few months and I had saved up enough to purchase one of the very early ones. Used it constantly for a few years with deadly effect especially once I added hypa flaps to it when those came out. Still use that first one! however rarely as I find as they became over used the birds were actually scared off from them and would sharply about turn at around 80-90 yards if I had the magnet out. I find the flapper does a better job now as the birds are happy to come right into the pattern still with that going if its laid out right....and a LOT lighter to carry!

Yes I agree very difficult to guage distance tried to show the extent of lead even with my "pull-away " ish shooting style to give an idea of range but after making this one my intention for the next outing (could be a while under lockdown as all drillings are safe) would be to try and place "marker" decoys at say 20-30-40-50 yards at start of video and where id be hoping to shoot most birds so that as /if any hit the deck you guys can see the range roughly? would that be helpful do you think?
