  1. Hulls, primers and wads now sold. Ammo still available but if it doesn't sell by this weekend, I'll keep it for nostalgia's sake.
  2. If you've never had pets, I don't think you can understand how tragic losing them can be. Having pets also opens your eyes to just how much "personality" an animal can actually have and causes you to have much more respect for other wildlife I think. As sad as it sounds, my cat is a good friend - she comes to wake me up if I've overslept and even helps to pick up pigeon feathers. Okay, she doesn't like to chat about cars or women and she can't handle her drink but I've certainly got worse friends. Just remember the good times!..
  3. No sorry mate, despite living in the Midlands for most of my 25 years, I've never been to Gloucester. There's a chap viewing the gun on Saturday morning and I'll honour his first dibs. If however it doesn't sell for any reason, I'll let everybody here know. Cheers
  4. Sorry, I should have put that in the advert. I'm in Bewdley but I'm in Worcester with work until next Saturday. Quite a distance from Newcastle either way!
  5. Hi all, This is my gun. Drop me a line if you're interested. Thanks!
  6. Hi chaps, I'm stepping out of the .410 game for the time being, so here's a few bits and bobs for sale: Goes without saying that ammo must be FTF with SGC, the other stuff is better collected otherwise there's little saving to be had, but it's up to you. Collection would be from Bewdley (weekends) or could be from Worcester during the week if you let me know what you want. 2 x box of 3" #6 Eley Magnum Extra Long subsonics = £5/each 3 x box of 2.5" #5 Lyalvale Express = £3/each 84 x Fiocchi 3" primed shells (Fiocchi 615 primers) = £5 99 x Fiocchi 615 primers = £1 190 x .410 Light Game Slug wads = £4 Let me know if you want any of it... Thanks!
  7. From your description, I know exactly where this is. Same thing with me - the chap handed me a glock 17, a box of ammo and told me to enjoy myself. For me it was great because I know my way around handguns and didn't want babysitting but I was very nervous about the other people in the range who might be learning how to operate a gun for the first time by trial and error! :o In fairness though, God knows how many times I've been "swept" with a loaded shotgun by an idiot at a clay range in England. I know that black handguns are infinitely more evil than shotguns with pretty engraving and nice wood but dead is dead.
  8. If anybody else shoots on your land, they might have been shot with an air rifle or shotgun. I've shotgunned rabbits and until I skinned them, there was literally no sign of injury other than suddenly being dead obviously. Still wouldn't explain why they were left there though.
  9. I've found eley to be noticeably quieter than other subs but also very tight in a CZ chamber and live rounds won't extract. Very accurate round though and expands nicely. Winchesters extract live if the chamber is clean, hit noticeably harder than any other brand I've tried (gaping hollowpoint) but are less consistent and accuracy is worse than the eley in my gun at least. The biggest surprise of the day is that in my CZ452, CCI subs (yes those cheap 100 round containers) will shoot a 5 shot group at 50 yards which can be covered with a 10 pence piece. They aren't as dramatic as winchesters on impact, but no rabbit escapes a headshot out to 100 yards with them anyway. They are tight in the chamber and are strangely loud though - not supersonic loud but they do whistle in flight. Maybe give them a try too, my shooting is certainly a bit cheaper now.
  10. True enough, their experiment makes me feel daft for being so incredibly cautious when reloading .410. I'm not going to shove a .454 casull in the gun any time soon, but I might not sweat so much next time I substitute different primers or cases.
  11. Yeah, what's an extra 40,000psi anyway... :o
  12. Still for sale - going up on evilbay on friday.
  13. Haha, yeah being up side down has its down sides, but on the up side, I have an up side down computer too.
  14. Hi all, For sale is a Brattonsound ST3 - full length 3 gun cabinet. It's never even had a gun in it and is still under warranty. I'd intended to use it as a second safe for an expanding collection but plans have since changed. £80 collected from Kidderminster area. (Cost £120) and please no offers folks. Cheers, Sterling.
  15. Thanks, I'll have a look at that. Cheers for the replies guys - it's all interesting info!
  16. I'd put money on Eley fourlongs being subsonic - they're by far the quietest cartridge through a moderator and they're cork/fibre wad too if that's what you have in mind for them. The 3" subsonic Eley extralongs are much louder but do throw 18gram of lead instead of the fourlong's 12.5gram. Also try lyalvale express 2.5" - they're not advertised as subsonic but they are very quiet and I've never heard a supersonic crack from them.
  17. Yeah I honestly wouldn't fancy hopping out of bed at stupid o'clock in the morning to shoot somebody's maimed pet either! I think my vision of turning up to a scene, dispatching the deer, high-fiving the police and heading back home with a boot load of venison might have been a bit unrealistic. ^_^ Interesting to hear about what responding to a deer collision is actually like though. Amazing what some people do whilst the rest of us are sleeping!..
  18. Jesus, I hadn't thought about the vet's drug being in the meat! The roadkill deer I ate was one that was clipped in the head by our truck when I lived in the US. Admittedly the front end was a bit of a mess and dressing was a fairly bloody affair but there was very little meat lost and it kept us in venison for several months. Interestingly though, we found an expanded pistol bullet in the poor thing's neck. Thanks for the reality check though lads, this obviously isn't a good idea. I'm doing DSC1 in feb and there are deer on my permissions, so I'll just put in for a variation instead. Thanks again anyway!
  19. Hi all, Wondering if anybody here is on the police call-out for deer traffic collisions. If so, what's the typical setup? I'd be particularly interested to hear from folks in West Mercia. Is there a selection process before being added to the call-out? What kind of interaction do you have with police/public prior to and after you've dispatched the animal? Do you remove the deer from the scene etc.? I've eaten roadkill deer in the past and because I'm not deer stalking currently, I thought I might be able to help out at RTC's locally and source some wild venison at the same time. Thanks for any info!
  20. As others have said; subsonic is a lot quieter than HV through a moderator because with HV you're hearing the bullet breaking the sound barrier more than the actual gunshot. Even with subs though, most rabbits will respond to the sound of your shot and the sound of your bullet impacting the rabbit next to them. Rabbits also have a habit of twitching/flipping all over the place when headshot and this can spook the other rabbits too. The more you shoot a particular piece of land, the more the rabbits will associate your activity with danger and respond to it. As your FAC is for target, I'd be very surprised if you've never used subsonic .22LR's. They're generally more accurate, quieter and the standard for most clubs. Some target match ammo is hollowpoint but not designed to expand, whilst some hunting solid points are designed to fragment. Ballistics is a complicated game but to be safe, stick to solids until you have the expanding condition on your ticket. Your RFD was mad to sell you hollowpoints!
  21. Okay, this might not answer your question of "if you could have just one" but I really like Hugh Fernley Whittingstall's book, A cook on the wild side. It's perfect for using to prime girlfriends, wives or mothers in law to eat your squirrel or rabbit dish without thinking you're a weirdo. For some reason if Hugh or Ray Mears or Heston Bloominthingy eat it, it must be ok.
  22. Same story in Worcestershire for me - even with the lamp, I'm only spotting one or two a night. Seen no sign of myxy this year so I guess it's just the weather. The lack of shooting is a pain but the vegetable plot is certainly looking better for the lack of rabbits!
