  1. :good: spacing your decoys with the right gap in between is essential for the incomming bird to feel at ease.Too close and Awwwwwwwway bye bye he goes... try been still although they cant see you behind the camo net, when your mate is there you will talk and therefore move..game up. remember.... ENOUGH "SPACE"... ENOUGH "SAID" :good:

Thats totally misleading, theres no such thing as the right distance, Pigeon are greedy feeders and will go for their buddys grain if they can, often feeding head to head, there however does have to be a "killing area", a space within a horseshoe pattern suitable on most occasions and laid out according to any prevailing wind direction. A good book will give you these patterns.

This space or empty area is crucial to good decoying and should be far enough away from the hide to allow the shot pattern to develop for maximum efficiency, but not so far away that its on the max range of the shotgun. I use 30 good paces to the decoy layout and a max range stick as a marker out at 45 paces.

On the subject of birds shying away one thing often overlooked is the backdrop to the hide, I have found, in nearly 40yrs decoying, that the use of a hide net as a backdrop is essential, in fact if you are fully camo,d you can sometimes just sit very still in front of it, moving at the last minute as the bird flares to land to take the shot.

A useful tip for beginners if two birds come in to land, allow the first one to actually land, shoot the second bird as it comes in, then shoot the first bird as it takes off, result two shots two birds, if you can hold your nerve lol.

  2. 80 odd reads and only 2 replies. Come on lets have some opinions, Please.

As you have said you are a beginner, as such obviously without the benefit of the years of pigeon shooting experience that most of us have, why do you think that decoy manufacturers make them as they do?

Your best tool is observation, we dont set out to shoot ferals, doves etc, our main quarry is Columbus Palumbus the wiley woody, take a good look at him next time and you will see why the neck and wing bars are important.

They act as semaphore signals to the others who see these wing flashes and we hope come diving in to the pattern to join their buddies feeding.

I hope this goes some way to answering your question, but Im sure you are cramming every bit of knowledge you can get by reading the classics on woodpigeon shooting??

  3. I'm having big trouble since including a T8 on my .223 setup, which has rendered the Scope Mounted lightfore 170 useless due to the glare reflecting off the back of the T8 and into the lens.

So far i've tried a mod cover and moving the mounting bracket forwards and backwards along the tube...

I'm sure someone else here has had this problem - what did you go? I don't really want anything which touches the barrel though....

Would buying a generic sunshade help - or am I wasting my hard earned, when something simple works better?

    Ta

    GB

Had the same prob and as a quick fix I fitted a black woolly sock over the mod and back up the barrel, looked pants but works.

  4. Hi guys,

On my new permission one of the fields has a footpath running across it.

The field is about 600 meters square(ish) roads on two sides. with about a 50ft verge before hedgerow and field which is good. But I am concerned about the path. Legally from what I can read I only need make sure I am no closer than 50ft from it when shooting but obviously I don't want to be shooting people. Can I legally shoot over it as long as no one is on it, near it, thinking of maybe walking on it one day, or is that just a boundary effectively splitting the field into two smaller ones?

Please don't flame me as I am a new to pigeon shooting and I am asking before acting to make sure I don't screw anything up for myself or the general shooting masses.

I ask because it is being decimated at he moment and I could do with being in that field.

Sorry if it seems a silly question.

My understanding is that you can shoot off a footpath and adjacent to a road, the key wording seems to be that you must not cause your shot to leave your boundaries or cause alarm and disturbance to any passerby, my advice would be to sleeve your weapon as soon as you sight or even hear anyone in the vicinity.

Never go to speak to anyone, tresspassing or not, anywhere with an unsleeved weapon/gun all to often they can make allegations that you pointed it or caused alarm which of course would involve the police should they complain, sometimes these people set out to cause a problem.

  5. Not sure which brand they were but my local shop had offer on 10 days ago box 50 for £8.25, i normally use remington v.max. All made by cci and to same spec so as far as i can see shouldn't be any different. Sounds like someone is taking wee wee.

They were 17gr Hornady apparently they were cheap because they were made with the wrong colour tip, who cares what colour it is at that price?

Badshot Im assuming you are in the Ashford area?

  7. I use to buy the Sellior Bellot cartridges in the flat pack boxes from a garage on the Isle of Grain.

They were a dirty, noisy cartridge (a lot like Baikals), but they did kill things.

Definitely not for use in your "best English gun".

    I haven't seen any for 20 years.

They certainly were dirty and noisy, remember once out pigeon shooting with my father one new years day, as usual me being young and stupid :good: had seen the new year in with grand style :good: and had an almighty hangover complete with a humongous headache :good: , eveytime a bird came over I flinched as I pulled...... oh the pain of it and my fathers laughter B) ringing even louder in my ears than the S&B,s :D .

  8. my Suffolk cert for .223 says Fox,,,,,, and Muntjac and CWD as prescribed under the Deer Act 1991 etc, no restrictions stated....

I have a Rifle Safety Training cert so not sure if that has any bearing on things :good:

Hi Im about to put in for a CF variation and several updates, ammo, small deer etc.

Has anyone from Kent renewed lately and what was the wording used please.

As Stuart says I dont want to derail the thread so PM if you think we are derailing but there must be many Kent shooters wondering as I am.

  9. > lead, how much lead should i be giving at 30 to 40 yards

Unless you know bird speed and distance, angles etc you can't really say but more than you think you'll need.

Don't get flustered by all the flapping, try to concentrate on the head and give that a fair bit of lead.

As an indicator, I'd previously thought I was missing from giving them too much lead but I tried

this yesterday when out with Henry_d and things started coming together much better.

    Nial.

Very few shooters miss out in front, its usually the case that not enough lead has been applied, I use the Bum Belly Beak Bang, 3 week method. Only because my use of the Rifle has slowed down my swing, I deliberate so add 3 weeks lol.

It really is a matter of trial and error but you will find that more lead than you think is required, especially when a pigeon is crossing with a 50mph tailwind.

Practise, practise practise it will come right.

  10. Most people store their chainsaws in their sheds or garages. I would therefore go with "shed".

However, I understand that Evil Elvis sleeps with his.

    <insert tumble weed gif here>

:good::good: When I bought my new (and first) Stihl last year Im told I was seen sitting stroking it.... yes I rather like Stihl saws :good:

  11. Very nice combo,s there. Alot showing 170,s mounted on the scopes with a mod.

Question is how many of you suffer from reflective light in the scope and how did you overcome it?, my solution was simply an old black sock lol.

  12. D2D,

Checked everything over mate and the rifle/bolt/action is fine l even put 20 HV's through it today and not one missfired...

....Whats the cost of Eleys etc? Think the CCI's were about £6.50 ??

Just bought Eley subs y,day £17.88 for 250. I rate them as best, have shot 1000,s without any probs.

  13. Hunter Sovereigns are great boots.

I had a studded soled pair and they lasted for 5 years. They are stiff in the ankle so you won't go over on uneven ground (unlike the bloody Aigles I have now)

You will need a couple of pairs of good warm socks though!

Been wearing studded hunters for years and agree warm socks, recently advised to go up a size to 11, thought sod it I,ll treat myself to a pair of neoprene zip up, chameaus..... well now done a fair few miles and they are great, warm as toast and comfortable even with thin socks and they come with a warranty.

I know they cost more but deffo get what you pay for.

  14. Being new to pigeon shooting I'm thinking of buying a magnet. Question is do they really work as a friend (experienced shooter) said not to bother as he thinks that they can scare the birds. Anyone got any suggestions? If it's yes use one then any recomendations?

Have another word with your friend, after all he uses them, try before you buy!!

    Rgds D2D

PS. Reading your earlier posts on the subject from a newby pov I would suggest you go out with your friend to get a more positive feel for decoying, nothing like a good day out to boost the confidence and lessen the learning curve :good:

  15. Le Chameau, the neoprene lined ones. They're the best pair I've ever owned.

In answer to previous post afraid not, but have just replaced them with a size 11 pair of these at £170 from chris potter,s tun wells.

Very comfortable as they should be at that price, ouch and ouch again :welcomeani:

  16. Hi. From the moment i discovered your forum i am all day searching it! It's great :welcomeani: .

I am 29, from Cyprus and because i am coming from a traditional hunters family, i am hunting since i was a child. I usually hunt partridges, hares and i love thrushes hunting. The last year i have started hunting woodpigeons and i am really excited. I am sure that i will a lot from you about.

    Sorry for my English.

    Antonis

Hi Antonis welcome to PW its good to hear from our members from abroad, I am sure we will likewise learn from you.

    What do you shoot with?

Not too sure about the "Thrushes Hunting" we like our songbirds in the garden, not on our plates ha ha.

    But do you eat them?

    Regards D2D

  17. I have just walked through the soles on a pair of Classic Hunter wellies in a year so I'm now looking to replace them. Can anyone share their knowledge and suggest which brand and model of boots will be best. Budget is £50 ish and they will be used mainly for dog walking and shooting.

    Cheers

What size are you, I have three pairs of size 10, Aigle, Hunter classic and Royal Hunter studded, all green and hardly worn to find homes for.

Discovered my feet needed to go up a size :welcomeani:

PM if any good to you.

  18. I like hitting them with my .223, or better still the 6.5x55. That learns 'em good! Never had a runner yet with those calibres, they just drop (or splat and drop with the 6.5)

So do I but we are talking about the times when out after Bugs with the .17hmr and along comes our friend Charlie.

  19. Right... Finally giving in an actually buying something instead of trying to make do.

I really need opinions too as, despite D2D's very kind offer, I'm going to be buying something new and doing something good for the economy.

    Scope mounted by the way...

So, First question: Clulite or Lightforce?

Second question: If Lightforce, 140 or 170?

It'll be plugged into the cigarette lighter if that makes any difference...

LF 170 everytime, the 140 isnt man enough when a filter is used, and a dimmer can dumb down the 170 if the sit needs it.

If using 100w bulb beware of using the standard Deben dimmer as used with a tracer max 55w, it will burn out the dimmer, deben do supply a 100w dimmer pn. TH2440

Scope mounted can be used handheld without a prob.

Hope this helps with your deliberations

PS the lamp is available to anyone who wants it.

  20. what range can i get out of a 17hmr i have a cz 22lr which has not got the range for for foxes over 60 mtrs and im finding i need extra range and also how much are the rounds thank you

I havnt bought any yet but read in the ads there is a 20grn .17hmr round, this imo would be the better route to take for occasional fox, personally I would not set out for fox with the .17 but have taken them when encountered whilst bunny bashing.

I have to agree with john,s and general opinion, CF is the only cal to use.

  21. I am thinking about getting a defender but my biggest issue is the mpg. as i have to travel a little bit for work and don't want to constantly be throwing money into the diesel tank.

so you guys who drive defenders what mpg do you get?

    thanks

    charlie

My 300 came with AT,s and I changed them for luvverly chunky mud tyres run at lower psi..... they have cost me 5-10 mpg and are a darn sight noisier on the tarmac something to remember?
