  1. Hi Jon the others have already spotted the decoy pattern mistake, all I would add that is that I have always had good results by doing alot of recce in the area the previous day and being on the chosen field, set up, at first light for a serious day, stay there and they will have several sessions feeding/roosting, finishing with a frantic "supper" mid afternoon before retiring for the roosting trees for the night.

If you arrive and they are already flocked they will take off enmass and possibly not return, its better to walk them off, if you fire a shot they will certainly not come back, they should start coming back in dribs and drabs to your by then set up decoys.

A rule of thumb from A Coates that I have adopted is that if you havnt had a shot for 20 mins, give it only 20mins more then move, your in the wrong place.

Dont forget as recently posted place a marker 40 paces out as a range finder to prevent over enthusiastic shots :D

Good luck on your next outing.

  2. Look at the distance the rear wheel is from the Kerk.

The van may be stopped, but how do you park with brake lights operative?

    webber

The distance from the kerb does not look as though he has parked, fishy to say the least. :good:

Recently noticed a huge increase in the number of cars/vans where the vehicle is relatively spotless until you look at the rear and number plate area :) So many cannot be read  You may risk a fixed penalty but no way will a camera get you, is it endorsable/ pick up points under construction and use regs?

  4. let me get this straight you are implying that 'that out of range bird' is more likely to come in because two tiny little eye lids have been removed, im pretty sure eyelids being removed is only a detail birds will spot if they are close enough to shoot and even then it is unlikely they will care, if a bird is willing to land down beside plastic decoys, which they are frequently they are hardly going to notice if a fellow bird has eye lids or not,

i appreciate you leaving tips and hints they can be really helpfull but please forgive me for my rant and apreciate it is a forum designed for people to reply, i am not just being annoying.

forgiven we all have a right to air our views(well at moment til government takes that as well, :P )..diff people set decoys up diff agree,,i set what i call a marker bird, this tells me or any guest i have with me,,wether woodie in killin range, this is the most important decoy to me,,,the better it looks more chance of enterin kill zone.....how good is a pigeons eye sight,,some days i think they can c things i cant,,and other days they blind as bats...i merely try an maximize my chances.

:birthday: We agree on that part, I use a stick from the hedgerow as a marker 40 good paces out front. Just to confirm in the heat of the moment my max killing zone, its easy to blat away at extreme ranges and I find this useful.

  5. In my case it wouldn't make a difference if I cut off eye lids or little colourful flags up there ar**s, the lil blighters just won;t come into my deeks!!!!!!! :):):)

Take this afternoon, froze off my backside for 2 pigeons but I had at least 600 woodies flying right over my head !!!!!

DO you ever feel like giving up??????

    :P:good::birthday:

With 600 flying over your head you must have been on a flightline to somewhere, maybe find out where and get in there?

Were you using a magnet, usually brings them in. Dont give up, its the naff days that make the good days outstanding ???

  6. I think he will punch you anyway for calling him 6 times, but still let you have a ferret when he's got one spare :)

He's too short to reach me :)

I actually have decided my son will need 2 Jills. We can have one each :)

You need three to do the job properly, just make sure you take more nets than LB does :birthday::good:

He will read this later and get his own back on me I expect :good:

    :P D2D

PS... PM me if you want some Ferreting books.

  7. when settin up dead woodies as decoys i always remove the bottom eye-lids,the more natural they look the better, that out of range bird is more likely to come in ,,try it.

You must have just read the same very old book that I read yonks ago....... trust me that would make not a tad of difference.

  8. he never did anything wrong... he was a good chap why has he got banned :good:

Ive always found him to be a reasonable bloke, got involved in absolutely everything and willing to help anyone.

A lifetime ban seems a little extreme to me given his past record, an explanation from the mods would be nice, if only to clear the air a little and put the record straight.

  9. I've been asked by a friend who has just had a big car park built next to him what trees I would recommend to screen it off and hide it. I don't know much about trees, but was thinking along the lines of one row of thick (from ground to top) conifers or at least evergreen nearest the carpark to completely block it off. Then I was thinking about having a second and perhaps third layer of trees, consisting of a mixture of poplars and some more ornamental and asthetically pleasing trees like silver birch, holly and hollyoak as well as a few other slow growers.

Does anyone have any recommendations - particularily for the very fast growing tree line nearest the car park, I have been told that he definitely does not want lleylandii, but feel that by having two layers of trees in front it may not be so bad?

Hi have you considered Laurel, socially acceptable and a very good screen.

  10. The best thing to do is to wait it out, never try to pick them up until they are clear of the earth.

You can offer your hand and let them have smell , so they know its safe.

I also make sure I am kneeling, or squatting when I pick them up, don't forget how big you look when looming over a ferret, especially a young one on their first working season.

If it is time to go home, then try to tease him out with a dead rabbit.

Just add to that try slitting the rabbit open and "waft" the scent from the warm entrails down the hole with a cap.

Has worked many times, failing that get your next Ferts from LB, ideal little workers.

  11. My young daughters use both foam and over ear muff types, total protection.

once your hearing is damaged thats it no going back.

    Tony

Whats that you say  seriously though my hearing has been damaged through not wearing any protection over years of shooting, I cannot hear high pitched sounds.

All the advice on wearing hearing protection is good, its a must, once damaged thats it.

    D2D

  12. The Parker Hale is good, but the SAK is much better. The latter is easy to strip, clean and reassemble, and it has better sound attenuating qualities. I have one of each, but if I needed a replacement I would buy another SAK (unless I wanted to shell out on an A-TEC).

    And its shorter, lighter, cheaper.......

    ;) D2D

PS having had both, the sak is quieter, shssssssss

  13. Not disagreeing with anyone here, but I'm not convinced we should be able to edit a sales post in ANY way.

Some of us go back to ammend the price if we lower it or change the price if we sell it; this COULD allow us to change the description of what was on sale after someone has viewed it and decided to buy it.

When an item is SOLD is imo the only time a post should be edited, that way it doesnt get back up to the top of the page again which inturn pushes the newer topics offpage quicker, I agree that bumping is annoying.

As a matter of interest how long is a "decent" period before an item can be readvertised?

  14. Hi, If we have anyone who is a chainsaw fitter or uses one for a living would they please PM me.

I dont want to bore everyone to death with my problem, many thanks.

    ;) D2D

Thanks but several PM.s already dealing with problem, its nothing spectacular just thought I would ask advice before I launched it up the field

    D2D

  15. Ive seen a lot in the papers and on documentarys about the elusive big cats that are said to be living around the uk and as us lot on this forum are ut and about day and night all over the country i wondered if anyone had any sightings or encounters with these?

Here is a question I have often pondered but thankfully so far have never had to come to a decision.

Obviously we all have various restrictions placed on our rifle certs and are obliged to adhere to them, however my question is

What would you do if one night you came across a big cat, call it what you will, within shooting range and you could reasonably be assured of a clean kill?

I really dont know what I would do, having shot it would I go public or just bury it as part of everyday keepering (possibly it had been feeding of my permission/farm animals in season), I may just tip my hat at it let it go and marvel at its just being there.

Answers on a postcard please :good:

  16. To be honest the guys on the Air Gun bit are ok. The Shotgun chaps IMO are ***** unless you have turned up in a Range Rover with the Full Hunting Monty on. I have seen it happen their with my own eyes.

I will stick with Chris Potter :good:

Which dealer are you talking about Lee?

Ashford guns staff deal with all the guns.

  17. Ashford Guns and Tackle is upstairs at KWG Kent Woolgrowers Tannery Lane Nr the Stour Centre.

They have been my Gun Dealers for years and like Rookie I can honestly say that the service is very good, friendly and they are certainly not out to fleece anyone.

Well worth a run over, they hold a large stock of both new and used guns.

I dont know if Ive broken any rules here but the info is useful and no harm to give them a big up?

    :) D2D
