  1. I needed to get some fresh air tonight after all those mince pies :good:

So I took some of the recently cooked up horse hoof bait to a favourite area and sat up from dusk - I saw the farmer on the way into the field and updated him on some recent results, he was pleased with the two less on the loose.

There was a good breeze blowing down the field so perfect for some strong whiff - The horse hoof potion went into a perforated baked bean can hung just off the ground. 80 yards from my sitting spot.

At 5:45pm along came this fellow - no lamp needed - nailed in the moonlight, he dropped straight into a cowpat, poor young pup.

    Farmer will be happy.

    Back out tomorrow.

    Cheers

Good result, maybe we should keep a tally on how many fall for NTTF,S Hoofmix, I have had 3 on it using the bean can method.

How far was he from it before he scented it and did he come right in as soon as he caught a whiff?

Mine were all hooked on it and came straight to it without stopping, maybe they thought that anything that smelt so bad has got to be good

Shot a squirell at 3pm today at the bottom of my garden, it was gone at 5pm :drinks: Cheeky bu**er, methinks I will have to have him.

  2. personally i wouldn't use a filter but if you feel that you must then try the amber filter

cheers guys gonna get the flip up red filter for my deben scope mounted lamp. been advised to use the dimmer to keep the brightness down. again are bunnies that sensitive?

Work with as little brightness as you can, just enough to enable you to shoot by, keep the beam above the Rabbit until you are ready to take the shot then gently lower the beam so as not to spook it.

Red is the best lens but will cut down the useful range of the beam. Dont forget to recharge your battery after every outing.

  3. I have just got a tomtom 720 from the mrs, is anyone nygood with them,

i have tried to correct a map error by adding my street but it doesnt show on my tomtom, i have uploaded it via mapshare and have also ticked use my updated but it still has not appeared.

any ideas as the tomtom help is ****.

Hi Once the sat nav is registered using the code, you will be able to download the latest updated maps from TomTom for 30 days only, you will also be able to download mapshare updates free for a period of 12 months only,

They somehow dont tell you that when you buy a TomTom.

Effectivly this means that after 12 months it starts to become out of date and a liability if you depend on it.

I dont know if this applies to other Satnavs but can vouch for it with TomTom.

  4. I am not a drinker, but if i where i would raise a class to the mods who have done a sterling job once again this year.

All the best to them.

Yep with you on that, without them the forum could get a mite techy at times.

  5. Some great tips coming in boys especialy the one with the fishing umberella think i,ll try that one when i go down to Wil Beasleys on Saturday with Webber.

However i forgot to put on the origanal post thats its my feet that usually starts to feel the cold first even though i have insulated boots & once that happens its not long before the cold sets into my body.

Any tips on keeping your feet warm, i was thinking of trying those battery opperated insulating socks anyone tried these ?

    McF

Try this next time, I usually coat my hands in vaseline and rub it well in then another coating just before going out, it blocks the pores and works well for me, I got the idea from a winter beach fisherman originally,

Try it on your feet, mine dont suffer from the cold but I dont see why it wouldnt work the same on your feet.

Failing that try several pairs of thin socks including ladies POPSOX, the more layers the better.

    Serves you right :lol::lol:

I always found that a cheese doorstep sarnie and a pint of milk before going on a bender seemed to lessen the effects the morning after.

  8. Does anyone know of a producer/printer of customised 4x4 sparewheel covers, the sort of thing that advertises your business or hobby but to a personal design.

Many thanks if you can put me on to someone.

  9. Lets get a few things straight amongst the points that have been made on this thread.

There is no personal vendetta between me (or any other Moderators) and any members on here, but its just the same old faces totting up the warnings.

So it will be the same old faces always in conflict with the Forum.

We are here to administer the Rules, maintain some order and participate in the Forum the same way that other members do.

If a Moderator, or a member, has strong views on a subject they might respond in a curt manner, as long as no personal insults, or other behaviour contrary to the Rules is involved, thats OK.

There is usually a balance shown in the comments made in threads (as there was in the field feeding thread), that demonstrates all points of view.

Its difficult for long term members not to sigh deeply when the same old questions come up, but they have been advised to ignore them, rather than groan out loud and leave it for someone else to respond.

No question is considered too "silly" to put on the Forum, everyone has to learn and this is a good place to do it.

I would just like to add, so that there can be no misunderstanding, my refererence to some replies being a little sarcastic was a general one and not aimed at anyone in particular, on the whole everyone is very friendly and will go out of their way to be helpful which IMO is how it should be, then just now and again a posting is made that perhaps is inappropriate and is not within the spirit of OUR forum.

As I said perhaps with a new year starting we may welcome even more newcomers to shooting and they will be made to feel that they can freely share and benefit from our combined wealth of experience?

    :) D2D

  10. I agree with berettaman1 on this one due to similar run ins with mods which I wasn't entirely pleased about, hope I dont get another b********* from them for saying that!

This site is not just to discuss pigeon related matters, its here for all kinds of advice, support, meet new people etc, its good that members can make us laugh every now and then, but the mods seem to be putting a stop to that.

I have to put a comment with this and say that a few times I have felt the same, naming no names but the replies have sometimes been a little sarcastic and seem to be contrived to belittle or cause ill feeling.

There was a post from a mod very recently which was downright confrontational and added nothing whatsoever to the topic being discussed, this begs the question do we feel comfortable in posting questions that may sound silly to someone who has had years of experience or do we feel slightly apprehensive because someone might reply in a way that makes us feel stupid.

I will admit to recently posting and doubting whether it was a genuine subject, I had jumped on the "Troll" bandwagon which is all too easy to do as there are a few about.

Since joining the forum I have had many pleasant exchanges of info and have learnt one or two things especially concerning Rifle shooting for which I am gratefull since it stopped me from making several expensive mistakes in buying the wrong kit.

The Forum is here to be enjoyed by all, newcomers and old hands alike, we should remember that we all started somewhere and perhaps if we treat it more like a club where we actively try to help each other, as many already do, then hopefully these incidents will become fewer and fewer. Lets see what we can do in 2008

I wish you all a very happy Christmas and hope Santa :) is kind to you :o

  11. Has anyone decided if field baiting is legal yet, I can see its not seen as ethical.

    Where could we find out?

    Tony

A sensible approach would be to enquire from the BASC thats what we pay our subs for, I WONT tell on you Tony if you want (and can afford the grain  ) to try it.

    D2D

  12. because one bird was on top of the other that is why he brought back two birds

But what are the chances of that happening? 10000000/1?

there was no further mention of the circumstances that I could see in the article, the birds would have been shot during a drive in the normal way.

Perhaps what I am asking is that if the dog had gone out of its way to pick a second bird then surely it should have been eliminated? Not awarded.

    D2D

  13. A question please to current field trial entrants.

Shown in this weeks ST report of the 2007 Ret Championships, a yellow lab competing with two birds in it mouth, my understanding of the rules is that it would be sent for a designated retrieve therefore it had deviated from its intended retrieve in order to collect the second bird.

The caption says that it was awarded a DOM how can this be so?

    D2D

  14. I'll have my two penneth then. Baiting fields is commonly done on large estates to funnel birds away from high value crops- The reason you have never heard of it is because all of you never been invited to shoot such a field after it has been baited. Normally it is reserved for the select view around the game keeper or farm manager. These fields are known as 'Engineered'.

These practices are often also used by pigeon guides to ensure good shooting, and if someone was to ring BASC or DEFRA they would clearly clarify the stance on the situation regarding this.

The last time I shot a fed field with two other guns we took over 700 birds of it in one session. So what would you rather do?

Chase around endless rape fields like we do throughout the winter- Have one or two shots and they all clear off

Or go to a 50 acre field and shoot 250 a piece?

Fair comment, but I still believe that under the terms of the general licence, should this be tested in court, there would be a case to answer. I can appreciate the thinking behind doing it for commercial reasons but have never actually heard of it being done, especially since the price of grain has gone through the roof.

The keepers that I know personally are actually too busy running about and organising the shooting day(sss) etc to have time to go pigeon shooting.

As much as they would enjoy it.

    D2D

  15. If you are a keeper wont you be to busy this time of the year to shoot pigeons?

Dont think you will have time to go pigeon shooting as you have more importants birds to look after.

Somethings not quite right here, if you are as you say you are a keeper, then why not just shoot directly over your neighbours beet crop.keepers are generally run off their feet just now and anyway the general licence states that we are able to shoot woodpigeons only if they are causing damage to crops, I have never in my "99" years heard of anyone baiting a field, and doubt if under the gen lic it would be legal?

  16. so did you study for months or years before you gained your fac or were you a novice once aswell???

i have a mentor but i'm waiting to purchase my rifle before going out with him.

he will be grilled on all things legal or illegal and i think i will ask him any questions from now on instead of being humiliated on this forum.

Humbug I dont think for a moment that anyone on here is deliberately setting out to humiliate you, from what you have said it would seem that you have gone about things in rather an unorthodox way. I would have gained a little experience with a mentor, bought myself a dozen or so shooting mags and then started asking lots of questions before I applied for a FAC.

If your budget stretches to it buy a copy of "Foxing with lamp and rifle" by Robert Bucknell it contains a wealth of info on real practical everyday rifle shooting, imo they should make it a mandatory read before applying.

As someone has said if you do a search on here there are not many questions that have not been answered already.

    Best of luck
