  1. To be honest if you want my opinion I would suggest you are trying to do to much to young.

When you start a training session let him off the lead for a few mins and let him scamper around. There should be no other distractions, only you. If you want to throw him a dummy, do it only once per session and do it at the start of the session. Never do it at the end as he will be tired. At 7 months he is still very young. I would only train him for short 10 min sessions as often as possible. 10 mins a day if far better than 2 or 3 hours on a saturday.

The best advise would be to buy either, The complete gundog training manual by James Douglas or Training Spaniels by Joe Irvine

    Good luck

    Best advice yet.

  3. As some may be aware, my son moved up from this to a 20 bore, so his little .410 is up for grabs, its a tidy little gun , with a skeleton stock, side lever etc so if you want one I'm after £40, hope this is a fair price, I will be guided by those on here who know better than me, Will put a pic on asap, as its at my brothers at the moment, he's the one with the SGC, I'm in the middle of getting mine, of PM me and I'll send them to you direct.

So F2F in the North East if anyone interested, all usual rules apply,SGC holders only etc

    Cheers

  4. Hi All just reading Febs edition of Sporting Shooter, imo an excellent mag with something for everyone.

Robert Bucknell is doing a series on Fox shooting, I rate his book very highly.

Turned to page 17 and there it was at the top................

That bl**dy photo of the Fox laid out looking through the scope with a pile of Bunnies next to it, I had to chuckle.

  5. I have trapped 100s of squirrels using the following traps.

take a 5 gal plastic drum clean all trace of oil ect and if possible allow to weather for a week or two. Cut a small hole in the back and a 10 inch hole in the middle of the front. Place low in a tree between 3 feet and 8 feet. Put 6 inches of wheat in the drum and a fen trap. Run the fen trap chain out through the small hole and secure to the tree to stop a fox running off with the trapped squirrel and taking the fen with it. Leave the fen unset until you see the squirrels have been taking the wheat , then set the trap and revisit as often as possible ( sometimes the squirrels que up to enter and I take 6-10 in a day ) . This way is useful if you can only visit the trap every few days . The squirrels get use to entering the trap when you cant visit it and are not suspicious when the fen is set. The only down side is that some squirrels are caught by only their back legs so take a stout stick with you to kill them.

By placing the trap between 3 and 8 feet you should only trap squirrels as it will be out of the reach of pheasants and not high enough to interest hole nesting birds such as owls. The by catch is very small and in 10 years running 5 traps in the nesting season I have only caught one pheasant , 3 rats , 1 jay , quite a few wood mice , but I average over 50 grey squirrels a year ( many more when i started , but I have got the numbers down in the area now ). But do not use this trap if you think red squirrels are about.

Thats a good idea as it keeps the trap/catch up out of the way of dogs and anyone just walking by, unless they pry.

I like the idea of reducing the catching of non prey species as well. On the downside however is the chance of just catching the back legs, is there anyway around that?

  7. Poacher is right, 12" for a prone shot is too high, and uncomfortable, unless you're shooting downhill so the ground is slanting away from you. Whatever you get make sure it's swivel though, I've bought twice (fixed, then swivel) and I know plenty of other lads who have done so as well.

John I agree that 12" is too high for a prone shot, I have the shorter one and also a 12" to 29" which is invaluable in the longer stuff taking a comfy sitting shot (just mind your thumb when 29" recoils, ouch :good:) just measured it and it sprang back on my thumb, the extra section increased the blow!

I mostly use the shorter one out of habit as the longer goes beyond the barrel and touches the mod.

Whichever one he goes for the general advice is SWIVEL.

  8. Bounty Chocolate Bar  Thats what ive always used.

One section of bounty will do 3 traps, trust me its the mutts nutts

I use Maize and bits of Maize cob that they can carry off, then the bit at the bit at the back of the trap gets them :good:

Take a cob and scrape some of the corn off with a knife around the trap to get them feeding instead off picking up the cob and running off with it.

Also partial to tinned sweetcorn if no Maize available.

  9. Swivel is from side to side to allow for some uneveness in the ground.

    Jerry

    Cheers Jerry

Do you find that the ability to move from side to side makes it less stable than a fixed harris bipod?

    G

9"- 13" or even longer if your barrel will take it and it wont protrude beyond the end, Harris Swivel, the swivel is the one to go for and the slightly longer one will allow for some sitting shots over long grass.

If you buy cheaper or fixed you will regret it imo. If a Harris swivel appears on here its usually snapped up whereas the fixed models are not so popular which says it all really.

  10. sorry , i thik ive misled you . what i mean is that the bitch has JUST HAD one litter, and my "mate" wants to breed her as soon as she is in season for another litter (££££££) so imeant to ask how long should you leave her -time wise - between litters

it depends on the bitches health and condition and your conscience !! the kennel club wont register a litter unless there has been a clear 365 days between whelpings.

i bred my ess at 5 yr old she had 9 pups by c section was really fit before hand but raising the pups has aged her so have had her spayed .

will breed from her daughter at a younger age .

    but then again

my patterdale had pups at 1.5 yrs old and shelled them like peas and made a great job of rearing them each bitch is different

if your m8 is making money he obviously isnt caring for the pups or bitch properly as there is not much money left over if there all cared for properly .

As Gav points out, and I can confirm, If the pups have been properly looked after, jabs and paperwork etc after 8 weeks the costs are considerable, a wise move if the lines are good, is to establish a waiting list together with healthy deposits from potential buyers from the outset, these then are used to offset the rearing costs, if any buyers drop out you know just how many pups will still be on your hands beyond 8 weeks.

Leave the selling on to the last minute could cause a major concern and you may have to reduce prices and even suffer a loss.

  16. I dunno, you should have stuck it out - you appear to have cut your nose off to spite your face.

**** shooting is better than no shooting.

The farmers would have probably got fed up with this fella given time - if one farmer was prepared to kick your **** over night time shooting & driving (which wasn't you) the least the farmer should then consider is withdrawing the other fella's permission (and then kicking his ****).

Sometimes it's the old boy network - if the farmers grew up with this fella and they are of a similar age they will always have something in common and you will be on the outside.

If this chap is as cavalier as you say he'll trip up.
