  1. I would try a box of each, then use whichever gives the best group, its pointless going faster if they dont shoot as well as the slower, even the 50gr factory loads will be doing about 3000fps ?. Good choice on rifles, i have heard they shoot very well. :good:

There was a post not too long ago that said he had always used the cheaper rounds but treated himself to a box of the expensive stuff and was absolutely amazed at how well his 527 shot he would not be going back the his usual brand.

You will have to just tell me how you got on if you buy some because Ive just spent all my pocket money on a Lidle NV and cant afford the posh ammo :(

PS had a scroll, it was Ferretboy Dec 12th.

  2. dusktilldawn one year left till you reach a grand old age of 100.

Ha ha thats how I feel sometimes, mrs S thank you for the kind thought but you will just have to keep guessing, Mung an Evil know whats what. :(

Just got home from another bout in the Krankenhausen so will have to delay having a sherbert or two until tomorrow night to celebrate my grand old age :good::lol:

  3. As many know I have a CZ HMR, brought back in the summer and since then I have had some great shooting and success, rabbits, crows and the odd fox have appreciated its accuracy. It came new screw cut and 16†barrel and I matched it with a harris bipod, Sak moderator and a Nikko Sterling Nighteater 6-23X56 IR on top.

But I was not 100% happy so I have fitted the Brookes Trigger Kit and with a little help from Sussex Lad fully floated the barrel, it was touching on the right side as many CZ’s seem to.

    See here:

The result, well I am very pleased indeed, this is a 5 shot group from this afternoon, range 75m as confirmed by a range finder. The barrel had been bore snaked before I started shooting, I ran 3 shots through it on an old target and then settled down prone to do a 5 shot group, this is the result:

The trigger is very sweet now and the floating seems to have worked a treat.

OK, it is not a huge range but it goes to show the CZ is a great tool and very capable in deed. For info ammo used was Remington 17gr ballistic tip, think I will be sticking with them!

    Jerry

Nice grouping, what could you achieve before the barrel was floated?

  4. I have acquired a larsan trap for a few weeks ans was wondering if the trap should be set up so that it is sprung as the magpie goes in or as it tries to fly out? Anybody got any good baits to try out, have broken an egg in there for now.

    Cheers

    Gibby

Do a search on the forum for Larsen Traps, you will find that they work most efficiently during early spring with a call bird.

  6. Just remember folks when using this in a hunting situation , you are using it as a curiosity and confidance scent. This means you want to place it in a container....film canister with holespunched in it stuffed with cotton works well...........where the wind can take the scent down to where you expect them to come from.

If you are not sure there are any around you can heat it over a single burner stove so that it simmers. This concentrates the scent even more and sends it further......something we do with honey when hunting bears and apple juice when hunting deer. You can smell a honey burn for about a mile so just think how far a bear can smell it.

    NTTF

NTTF I made some about 4 months ago and keep it in a seald jar out in the greenhouse,I havnt used it for a while and it seems to have lost its pong a little, would it recharge if I heated some through again just before an outing? Or would it be ruined, have you tried this?

Also I found the scent worked more efficiently using abit more in a baked bean can with holes punched in it without a lid, filled with cotton wool. I hung this about 2ft off the ground and had charlie on to it within 20/30mins on several occasions.

    :good: D2D

  7. This thread started by and starring NTTF, has now been pinned at the top of this section.

Good move looks well interesting and informative.

    Tony

If it hadn't been "well interesting and informative", we wouldn't have pinned it.

oooooo a bit of an unnecessary comment Mr C

Watch out Cranners the backups been called up   Only teasing. :good:

  8. I hate it the way the government tells you what to eat and what not to eat. Its up to me what I want to eat.

    The advice is good.....

Its the rest of us (through the NHS vis taxes) that have to pay to treat the few irresponsible idiots when they are hospitalised with stomach bugs through not using basic common sense, there is alot to be said for not washing poultry then splashing water around the worktops.

How many times on the telly have we seen the so called experts stuff a bird then grab knives etc, speading germs everywhere it makes me cringe the number of times it happens.

Nigella Lawson the other day stuffed the Turkey then started simpering and sucking the orange marmalade off her fingers, silly cow!!

Hope you all have a happy and safe christmas :good:

    D2D

  9. So still bordering on high velocity 22 rounds then? Noise wise!

As the round is super sonic then there is nothing you can do about that.

Having said that when shooting "long" range over open ground the rabbits dont tend to take that much notice. I have bolwed over 2 or 3 one after the other a number of times.

Yes it is noisier than .22lr but they dont seem to know where the noise is coming from and seem to ignore it at times.

    Jerry

Apparently its called the Doppler effect and has on occasions made foxes run towards the gun, as its mate further out has been whacked, they hear the round making a crack as it passes behind them and assume the danger is there.

    D2D

  10. Mrs C is shopping there today with the MIL, I hope she does the same.

The Folkestone Sainsburys and Tesco's Supermarket diesel is £1.09.99, which is exactly what the local garages on the Marsh are selling it for. :P

Both Sains and Tesco (Crooksfoot) are £1.06.99 But Tesco Park Fm are a whopping £1.09.99 I personally wait, If I can, until they do the spend £50 and get 5p a ltr off voucher, then go in with the Disco and 2 Jerry cans for the old Def.

    D2D

  11. I have owned 100's of waxed waterproof hats over the years and am getting fed up with the horrible musty smell that eventually emnates from them, which makes me buy another one before they are worn out.

As I need a new "walking about" waterproof hat, I have been looking at the Australian leather oilskin hats that get advertised on eBay.

    Like this;

Has anyone else bought one, or something similar ?

Complete with long tailfeather?? very nice

    D2D

  12. I've just read an article on the net that has me a little worried. Is it true that ammonia based copper solvents can etch the surface of the barrel? If so will this be a problem for accuracy or is it only bad for the finish on the outside of the gun? Here's a cut of the article:-

"There are specialist copper solvents on the market such as Hoppes Benchrest, Sweets and Shooters Choice Copper Remover. Both Sweets and Shooters Choice Copper Remover have strong ammonia bases and if not used with care can etch the surface of stainless steel barrels. I do not recommend the use of strong ammonia based products in any stainless barrels. I usually find that unless the barrel is badly fouled that Hoppes Benchrest does a very satisfactory job."

Should I change my solvent for something non ammonia based or am I worrying over nothing

Theres quite a bit on just this subject in "Foxing with lamp and Rifle" by Robert Bucknell, If you want I would be happy to PM you the info?

    D2D

  13. hi i am thinking of trying a rangefinder i will be using a 223 for foxes and a 17hmr for rabbits, does anybody have any advice on using rangefinders. i see a lot advertised but do not know anybody who uses one.

I was talking to a golfing friend who told me that he uses a rangefinder that lines up with the pole at the next hole and he reads off the range fairly accurately, could I wonder this be used or adapted for use in shooting, maybe lining it up on the nearest fence pole, the thing costs under £50?

    D2D

  14. why will it be destroyed?

the dog was owned by a bloke who has to move home (but cannot take the dog) the dog is in kennels at the moment but that comes to an end this Saturday. I'm not too clued up on the in's and out's of it as it's a friend of a work collegue, but by all accounts it's a cracking dog.

So is it you or a friends work colleague that’s going to say if its put down on Saturday.

I've got to say whoever it is, is an idiot!

Why destroy a perfectly healthy dog when you can drop it off at the RSPCA/Battersea/Police station to name a few, for, wait for it……………………… FREE??

If you/friend/colleague doesn’t know what to do, which they obviously dont, then dont get involved. You yourself have said it’s an excellent dog and will make a good pet, so why the hell have it put down. I hope your just saying its going to be destroyed to hurry a few interested people along.

What the **** are you on about mate, our lass came home from work with the tale i've told you so been the caring animal lover i am i've put up a couple of posts to try and save the poor animal, and as it is i've sorted the problem and the dog has gone to a good caring loving home. FENN

Good man, glad you got her rehomed

  15. Hi I have a very old German Pecar scope marked 4x81 it performs well in low light conditions and has a very fine crosshair.

What I am puzzled about is the x81 part since it has a small objective lens how can it claim to be x81?

Im hoping someone who is an expert on lenses etc can explain.

    Thanks

    D2D

  16. dusk2dawn,

Drag coefficient is, in effect, the efficiency of the shape of the bullet.

A basic 22 rimfire will be about .1, whereas better designed, and more streamlined bullets, will be a lot higher.

It is used in the calcualtion of trajectories etc etc.

    I hope this helps.

    <_<

Thanks for your replies on Drag Coefficient, do you think it will form part of the FAO,s conversation at renewal time? :big_boss:<_<

  18. Good work on the treerats the sooner the government put some sort of bounty on them the better, around me there are hundreds of the ****** things, as bold as brass, its a wonder any of the garden birds are able to rear a brood.

As you can guess I dont like them around. It was 1964 when I last saw a Red in Mote Park Maidstone.
