  1. What is an approved load for a fox, I have seen several foxes shot on game days with normal game loads. It is all very well to say you keep a couple of BB's in your pocket but how often do you get the chance to change?

Any well placed shot at a decent range will kill. Which is what shooting is all about.

As long as you dont have to (apparently) beat it to death with a stick.......

If you are shooting birds with a gameload then stick to that, but on an organised foxdrive a far heavier load would be appropriate, the Ely diary is a good source of guidance to shot sizes penetration etc and matches loads with quarry it also makes a nice inexpensive xmas pressie from the kids.

  2. Don't like CCI ammo, I prefer Eley's or Winchesters, but that isn't much use if can't get hold of them ;)

That is strange my dealer said on Monday that Elys were on back order, he had some but when they were gone etc, anyone else heard they may be difficult to get hold of?

  3. :good: i have 45g 3" no 5, kick like a bloody mule

i am also picking up some 2 3/4 sgs to fit my auto so i have 3 very fast shots if i need them.

Unless I am reading you wrongly you may have missed the point, 45g of no5 is still not an approved fox load unless you want to stop it running away due to sheer weight of shot B)

Use BB,s and you wont go far wrong and your semi due to its action should be soaking up most of the recoil, maybe you are not mounting the gun into your shoulder properly?

  4. Think your refering to me - I just find them a bit cheap and tacky feeling, with glass which I wouldn't like to compare against a better make in a year or so - don't forget that glass is technically a liquid (wait for the fallout!!) - look at old church stain glass windows, some of the very old ones have holes at the top of the pane and thicker at the bottom, due to the glass flowing downhill! As such glass degrades, and cheaper glass degrades faster than expensive glass. Just my opinon mind! :P

Dont think it will bother me in 100yrs if the glass in my scope has flowed downhill ;) B)

    Sorry but coulnd,t resist it,

  5. I would step out on a limb here and say NO, you need one with a dimmer switch on it, as this will not only save battery but stop you spooking rabbits when just "scanning for eyes". So the Max PRO or Mini PRO, either fine with an air rifle although if you buy the Max PRO you will never need another lamp again, even if you move upto .22cfs for foxes.

    Hope that helps,

    Just my opnion,

    Dan

AS Dan says buy a max pro and you need never buy another lamp, I have several other types sitting in my shed all redundant and bought over the years, if I had gone straight for a max pro I would have saved a lot of money, the dimmer makes all the difference not only in shooting technique but saving battery power.

Mine cost £118 with a filter so the difference is hardly worth it.

  6. First thing I'll say is that I'm not starting a knit collection so I won't be picking any of you lots from you, OK? B)

Second thing I'll say is that Henry is correct in what he says about the foxes vitals and the patterning plate/board/sheet.

If you're to shoot at something like an oil can and miss, tell me, where have your pellets gone? Such a target doesn't make you any the wiser as the ground /backstop will soak them up and tell you nothing much. A higher concentration of pellets could be going elsewhere.

A proper pattern plate/board/sheet will tell you if your gun & load combination shoots most of the pellets a bit high/low/left/right at which ever range you decide to shoot at. A shot plate with BB's and one with 6's will look very different, there just aren't as many BB's so these things are important.

Like I say to my shooting buddy about rifles, but it applies here, it's kinda handy to know where that shot's going to go :good:

(This isn't meant to be an argumentative post).

Very fair comment and the non atagonistic approach is appreciated, all I was trying to get across was that if he couln,t hit a specific target hard then he should get more practice in before going after the fox.

the comment about hitting a fox and it running on is also good, have seen that many times, once saw a fox run down a line of guns and only dropping because it was weighed down with shot

  7. If your not sure of how your gun will pattern with BB,s, before you encounter a fox, get a couple of 5 ltr oil cans, imagine these to be the size of the engine room........

A foxes vitals side on will be no more than 4" x 4" and nothing like a 5 ltr oil can !!!!!!!!

No one said they were did they?B)?

The advice was given to see if he could even get the centre of the pattern into a 5ltr oil can which at 40yds is small enough if you are inexperienced.

Having been on a great many organised fox drives I know from experience the level of shooting with a SG that is required.

I do love these guys that jump on the keyboard and have a go for no real purpose, other than to be argumentative and nit picking :/

    :good: D2D

    I think you did......

If you need to pattern a shotgun you will need a piece of paper/pattern plate around 5 feet x 5 feet to get a true representation of the pattern and how central it is.

Still nitpicking, you need to chill and count to 10 before posting, we are all big boys and dont need unconstructive comments, my advice was simply to see if he could place the shot in the right spot at a reasonable range to humanely despatch a fox and it matters not a toss whether its a bean can, an oil can or a barn door!

    End of.........

  9. :/
I'm with Kirky on this one,

I am an experienced rough shooter of many years, I have chosen not to shoot foxes until now, i have done my research and now i intend to gain experience, and in doing so help a farmer that has a problem. I have also stalked muntjac and got within 35-40 yards so i am no novice.

How else am i supposed to gain experience? Im not without actually doing it am i?.(Kolb's theory of experiential learning ....practice!!!)

I am in the process of getting my Fac, the other farm i shoot on has okayed it, but the farmer wants the job done now and I want the new shooting land!!!! (selfish...yes shooting land down here is like rocking horse poo and if a fox has to die to make that my shoot then c'est la vie!)

    :/

With a shotgun always be aware..Pattern kills - not a pellet!!!

Thanks dude, i am going to use full choke, and put 3 shots in the engine room with my semi :good:

If your not sure of how your gun will pattern with BB,s, before you encounter a fox, get a couple of 5 ltr oil cans, imagine these to be the size of the engine room, pace out your expected range and have a go at med and max range, you might be surprised at the result...... better to do this now before you possibly leave a fox crippled :/

  10. :good: I have just been offerred some more land to shoot on provided i take out some resident foxes that are bothering the lambs. I know that several people on here use 12g to dispatch them, i have a some 30g no 5, is that enough? What do carts do the others on here use to kill foxes?

Its good land, lots of pigeons, bunnies and less that 2 miles form home!

Would agree with all the lads comments and add it would be advisable to use your guns tightest choke for Fox, personally I have always used BB,s these are standard issue on our Fox drives.

  11. I'm now sorted on the DVD/ Video front thanks to a kind PW member (you know who you are, thankyou).

Opinions still welcome, do you find them useful or just entertaining?

I wouldn't mind a look when you're done with it (he said cheekily).

  12. :

Well i hope they find the poor girl safe and well. Then they can find some parents who are willing to take care of her. I don't care what the circumstances are, you do not leave a 3 year old alone in house. This outcome is extreme but it could have been a nasty accident within the house.

I don't leave my 6 month baby daughter alone asleep in the house while i ****** off to the pub next door. "Hey, it's ok, i'll check on her every 30 minutes and i'm only 30 meters away". Not good enough. B)

Im with you on that, its not bloody good enough  , and they are supposed to be educated people, they dont deserve children if they are not prepared to care for them 24/7, I,m just a tad cross about this, it was so avoidable, but at the end of the day all we can do is hope she will be found safe and well.

  13. Well done - positive I.D., its better to miss taking a shot but thats easier said than done, I shot one wooden rabbit last week as it was nearly dark. :good:

Wooden Wabbits, whats that all about then, if your short of the real thing I,ll send you some over

  14. I need to buy a new Air rifle for use at work, I will be shooting mostly Pigeons but I will also have to shoot smaller birds as well (Starlings, Indian myna’s etc)

For the most part this will be in public areas shopping center car parks, museums and warehouses so to avoid damaging buildings and other infrastructure I need to be able to adjust the power level to suit the situation.

What I’m looking at is a rifle that has the following features.

    Accurate

Adjustable power level from around 10ft/lbs to 30ft/lbs

Hard wearing, this will be a work gun and not a safe queen

    Reasonably priced

I would prefer a pumped charged but one that takes a co2 canister would be fine

    Any recommendations?

Shooting indian mynahs, we could do with you over here

    Only joking

  15. Was in a local shop today and saw a remmy 3 shot pump @ £250 and it got me thinking I'd like to have one in the cabinet, well, just to have one really.

Be a laugh trying to hit simo pairs of clays with it etc.

So what would you recommend? £250 is about top whack for something that won't get a lot of use...

Ive had a Mossy pump since before they made the three shot rule and lucky old me had it put on my cert so its as god intended it to be, 8 shots and a lot of killing power in a flock of woodies.

Its all black a 500 I think and has a c-lect variable choke so I can change the choke just by twisting, it strips down in seconds and never jammed or missfired they are in my opinion the best workhorse available, saves reloading when your hands are frozen, must have shot thousands of cartridges through it, my favourite decoying gun, has put up with alot of abuse. It still looks and performs well, excellent value for money.

  16. Guy's

I have just collected addresses for a number of farms in the area. I was planing on posting them a letter with a business card and permission slip.

I was wondering if anyone had a covering letter which they could share - mine sound really poxy!!

    Thanks

Hi my advice would be to forget the permission slip, you hope to shoot on their land and a far more personal approach is needed, face to face, dont send out letters they will be binned.

Look on your local OS map for suitable land then do your research, find out the farmers/landowners name, crops, etc. If practical have a look first at the land to confirm its suitability for your chosen weapon.

Then when you call personally you should be able to discuss possible vermin problems and offer a solution.

I recently moved into a new area and drew a radius of 10 miles around my house and went after every suitable bit of shooting land shown on my OS map, had very good success rate so far with both SG and Rifle. Good luck. remember you might only get one crack at it and first impressions count.

  17. Cheers for that. Does the smell go away eventually??? I heard they stunk but was supprised how much

Yes use lots of salt and it will cure, but its the scent you want for training, is NTTF on holiday?

Afterthought have you scraped all the fat etc off?
