I've just ordered a 15kg bag of Dr Johns Platinum. It's not so much as me saving money, but more of paying too much for almost the same thing. Anyway, I'll try my dog on this, and if I noticed any difference with her poo ( runny etc) after allowing her stomach time to adjust, then I'll stick with John Burns.

I use this with one of my labs as he doesn’t hold condition on Arkwrights. The Platinum has twice the fat content and higher protein level. It has done the trick with him!

Hello,  That looks a nice lake, Reminds me of fishing in Co Clare on Lickeen Lough ,Yes despite the weather a bit blowy and some showers it brightened up mid afternoon and the trout were topping on buzzers giving Stewart a 2.5llb rainbow and lost a few more, i was hoping more people would be interested but Giles ( Sandspider) is still looking on a day fishing

    😀👍

  3. Glad this went so well for you both.

My fishing is now so far removed from the days on Farmoor I so enjoyed. Yesterday was my first one out as I have been away. It was a lovely warm day with gusty wind making it difficult to get the dry fly where I wanted it. Nonetheless, it was so satisfying to take my first brace on a hares ear klinkhammer fished dry.

i had the reservoir to myself and two lovely rainbows with full tails, lost a few more and missed I don’t know how many light takes!

  4. I have an Aaron too but multifuel so I can burn the anthracite eggs too. It throws out a hell of lot of heat for its size so important to match to the room. I would never go wood only as anthracite is so convenient.

  5. Wagg is often criticised but it kept my labs going for years until I increased their energy requirements by working three days a week on the hill. Now I feed Arkwrights which seems to maintain condition better and is no more than £15/sack.

I've still been keeping up and reading, thanks everyone!

Over the weekend I did spend a quite a while - ok, a very long while - everyone seems pretty friendly in this hobby  -  in a couple of local gun shops and tried a LOT out for fit and feel - I found it useful, even if heading to school might be the better choice! @Wilts#Dave, @London Best

I also today shot another 100 through a mix of the Citori, the bargain Winchester (yes, @Dave at kelton, @holloway,  it's a 101, and it was peanuts! - though can't find many like it on the wider web at the moment), and my friends Beretta 692, and yes, the longer barrels do indeed have an impact on sound!

@Gunman, I'm about 6ft, overweight, but fairly large frame too and quite healthy for it, and shooting casually around 50-100 every 6-7 weeks at the moment, 3-4 weeks in future.  Like I said, the Citori's weight isn't actually a problem - maybe like @Fellsidesaid it's that fairly dull, "fence post" feel that makes it seem even more heavy, and a lack of balance - rather than the length of the barrels - counting against it, than just the weight of it.

For reference, on one set of scales, and not particularly well measured (but measured badly in the same way each time!)...

    30" 1984 browning citori, belgian made - 8.3 lb
26" winchester 101 xtr lightweight, japan made - 7.4 lb
    30" ~2015 beretta 692 - 7.4 lb

Oddly the 4" longer beretta was indeed the same as the "lightweight" winchester! If anything it was a little less!

From handling a lot of guns in the last 2 days, and improving my stance a little with some more input, I'm now 'leaning in' to the gun more properly - I seem to be quite lucky - most of the mainstream geometry seems to fit me fairly well! Older Lanber and Baikal were pretty good on the cheap side, Miroku and older beretta seemed to vary, some good, but quite a few were too low at the stock - but the more modern browning b525, miroku mk38, beretta SP, 682 gold E and ATA's all seem to fit quite right! The citori I think is actually a little low, like @Konor said - maybe why my friend went for it! - as is his new 692, though less noticeably so after a tightening up of my stance.

Both stores were very enthusiastic around ATA shotguns - and they certainly seemed nice! - good feel, good fit, and the ground I was at today has them as club guns, so also handled ~200k and ~500k well used examples - they seem to hold up very well! Nice crisp action that actually made the newer beretta's seem a bit spongy in comparison (am I imagining it, or did beretta get a lot worse in that regard?), but if anyone has any horror stories or other shade to cast, I'd be interested! When a brand new ATA with 5 year warranty is £699, spending ~£600 on a 40 year old unusual browning seems less attractive!

Talking of which, @Genghis , neither of us still really know what a good price for the Citori is! He bought it when the market was pretty weird just after Covid lockdowns were lifting (and mostly because he couldn't find a 525 or a silver pigeon for a decent price at the time!). Nobody got any idea?

I heard somewhere between 5-9 months in Cambridgeshire at the moment from the stores today and yesterday, but yes, it does seem the 12 weeks quoted on their website is overly optimistic! My friend has promised to finally sell his four spare old SxS (semi accidental auction wins!) and free up space in his cabinet sooner though Coming soon to the "for sale" section here I'd guess!

Incidentally, on the 101 - if anyone has a couple of old invector/mossberg/winchoke in 1/4 and a 1/2 gathering dust in a drawer, I think I know a buyer!

The one thing I'm sure on though, like @Sweet11-87 said, and my friend has discovered - I am definitely buying a very big cabinet!

If I lived wher you do I would get myself over to Elderkin in Spaulding. You won’t get a better gunshop and great range of OU. Look at this as it is a 101 by any other name.

  7. This is a great initiative if you live within reasonable travelling distance; the kids love it with so much to do. I will be teaching fly tying again and the wildfowling club will be there too! Hope I might meet some off this site!

Does anyone know of or have examples of shooting steel shot fibre wad loads? I.e. if you loaded up your own steel shot cartridges and just used a plain fibre wad so there was nothing to protect the barrel. If shot size, pressures and speeds were kept low would their be much damage and how long would the barrel last?

Just a bit of an idle thought as looking at some of the cheaper pumps a new barrel would cost £100 so wondering if a rebarrel would be cheaper than shooting something expensive.

Try and see Bill Harrimans experiment with a muzzle loader. No damage if I recall it correctly.

  9. Jimmy’s are superb off road but the prices second hand ones are going for are ridiculous. We had to scrap my wife’s 2006 last year because of rust underneath. So if you go for one be bloody careful they are awful for rust, behind headlights, all inner sills, tool pan in the rear and rear wheel arches.

i,would love another bit for the money I am not convinced they are good value any more. I want something to,supplement my van and for the same money as a Jimny have a lot of other choices including freelander.

Awesome fish well done I’m sure you will remember this day for many years 😊👍

I caught a couple nearly 45 years ago sadly their habitat was destroyed by gravel dredging and they are no longer there. It’s good to see them again 😊

Trawling of any type in that area is not permitted and apparently the skate are making a massive come back. My nephew caught one of about 1lb on his light gear too.

Thanks for that , but picking up the wad could be a bit awkward as it’s being direct drilled into yellow mustard that was planted and sprayed off as a soil improver also barely stubble from previous year . So won’t be as easy to find as on normal drilled field.

I haven’t used on pigeon but very happy with Eley Ecosteel on pheasant so you don’t have to worry about wads

Brilliant , I am in two minds to get another puppy as my one now is getting towards ten and showing the first signs of stiffness after a fair bit of work , I will wait a bit longer and see how he get on over the next few weeks .

GOOD LUCK with your new edition to the household and look forward in seeing the photos      MM

It’s worth giving them a glucosamine tablet each day if showing signs of stiffness. I just buy at Holland and Barrett

What a fantastic trip, your going to need a very big bag of chips to go with those!

There are a few places in Scotland I believe that Skate go over a 100lbs from some deep water ledges (shore side). Think I saw some Youtube videos a while back.

Here is one I have quickly found. (Am certainly not belittling Dave at Kelton magnificent efforts).

    Respect

Thanks and yes there are spots. My brother tried one off Skye without success.

  14. It has been my brother and nephews ambition to catch a skate, they had tried without success from the shore so booked a boat out of Oban a couple of weeks ago. I was invited and whilst I don’t do a lot of sea fishing it was a chance to spend time with my family and its fishing!

Staying overnight we were picked up at 08.45 and steamed out for about 30 mins where we dropped baits into 350 feet of water. It was slow and apart from a few spurdog on light tackle the skate weren’t playing after three hours. The skipper upped anchor and moved us further out to catch the fresh tide.

Now we were in about 450 feet of water. Within half an hour the first rod went to be picked up by one of my nephews. He is a fit boy and tennis coach but it was half an hour before we had a skate on the deck. Measured it was estimated at 78lb and labelled a “baby” by the skipper. This despite being the biggest fish I have seen in my 67 years.

Then it got silly with rods going regularly. First my other nephew hooked and lost a skate on light gear after about 30 mins. Next rod was a pal who fishes with my brother and has a YouTube fishing channel. An hour later and a fish of 103lb with another rod hooked in. That was my other nephew fighting a bigger fish. After three quarters of an hour we have 123lbs of skate on the deck.

Now it’s my turn. Hooked in I can’t believe the power of the fish and after an hour I still have to shift it off the bottom. I take a few feet of line in and it takes more. Eventually I know it is coming up as I can feel it’s head shaking. My shoulders are aching and my back is killing me. In my thermals and waterproofs I feel like a boil in the bag kipper. My brother is giving me lucozade and I am hoping there is a defibrillator on board. After an hour and forty minutes and utterly spent I have landed the biggest at 128lb but!

Whilst playing my fish my brother’s rod has gone and he too is fighting a big skate. It’s time to up anchor and the skipper is just holding the boat on the engine as the last fish comes on board at 198lb. It could have been heavier as it was a pregnant female and all weights are extrapolated from measurements before fish are returned.

A days fishing I will never forget!
