The more I think about it and the more I see air gun crime (innocent people being injured) in the news, I think that more care needs to be exercised with the handling and storage of air weapons.

I think that there is a voluntary code that people can follow.

Probably time for another Arms Amnesty??

What's wrong with leaving an air rifle in a locked car? I frequently do. Don't lock mine up either.

Because it's a firearm. Firearms should be secured properly to ensure that they do not fall into the hands of those who should not have them. For the extra effort that's needed to take the guns into the house and tuck them under a bed or in the loft, it pays of as it's much better than ringing the police when your car's been nicked and having to say: "Oh yeah and erm, there was a rifle in the back of the car" :good:

Poor bloke seem a comedy of errors situation here (but not funny at all) how many times have i herd it don't leave your keys by the front door where they can be got at through the letter box, it says he normally keeps them in a gun cabinet so seems a responsible type of bloke probably got mixed up in the turmoil of moving and just didn't think for a moment lets be honest we have all done it.

I think the point we are all missing ( sorry to digress but its a perfect moment too high lite something and get it off my chest) is that you should be able to leave them in your car over night, in the understanding that they and your car will still be there in the morning, but unfortunately our police force and law courts do nothing to SCUM that take what is not theirs and in many instances protect said SCUM if they where to do what they get paid too and protect law abiding citizens and their property/goods and persecute the SCUM situations like this would not arise

i for one will pass on this info to my local FADs in the hope that this poor chap may see his guns again and the SCUM are caught

they're only air guns so perfectly legal to leave locked in the car or in the garden shed or wherever you want. Unlucky bloke the only lesson to learn is don't leave the keys near the door though depends how much they want the car as lets face it its better than having the door kicked in during the night and them coming looking for them.

As a matter of interest, because of the violent ways car keys are removed from their owners, in or out of the house, the police do not recommend taking car keys up to bed with you. Leave then out of sight of the letter box, where they can be hooked and removed, but leave them open and exposed away from you and your bedroom.

If you get broken into for your shiny BMW keys you dont want someone appearing in yours, or your kids bedroom for them.

If your car disappears then the insurance will pay out because the keys were secured in your house, the evidence of the break-in proves that.

If you carelessly loose the keys when you are out of the house, and do nothing about it, like getting the car reprogrammed, then the insurance company will walk away from you.

As for leaving an Air rifle in the back of a car overnight, my view is that it is a weapon that can do as much damage as a shotgun in the right hands - if I leave my gun in the back of my car and my FEO finds out, its goodbye SGC, and i'll never hold one again. With public opinion, recent fatalities and the British Nanny State, I really can't see it being too many years away before all Air Guns are under a personal certificate of sorts, and incidents like this just bring that day closer.
