fielddweller
I am fairly in experienced on decoying and would like some help. I have permission on a large rape field which has hedges ,trees and long grass/dyke on 3 sides which has proved good back cover so far. However the rape is getting thick except for the bottom end which has no cover at all, and while ive been shooting this week ive noticed they are all feeding down there. One of the flight lines takes them over the bottom of the field and when i was out on Saturday there must have been 500plus all feeding,I was going to go today but the weather stopped that.I normally use 4 poles and a net to 3 sides and the hedge or trees as the back drop. So what i would like to know is can you set up a hide a 100yds inside the field or on the edge which has no cover?and if so how is this best done. Many thanks Fielddweller Edited November 29, 2009 by fielddweller
pigeon controller
I;ve shot from the middle of rape fields with good results by using a fishing brolly as the back and three poles in front and cover the whole with dark green camo. I sit in the hide and stand to shoot out of the front when the birds are in range.
Billy.
If it's a dry day or you're willing to get muddy, set up your decoys in the middle of the field and lie down with the netting over you. As the birds come in, sit up and shoot them. I couldn't find a pigeon example, so here's a goose one. name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>"> name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">
Beardo
same principle as we used here... http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...howtopic=103128 just use the nets to make a box, and if you can, use a smaller net to make a half roof
weejase
I use a stealth cammo net and find It`s big enough to make a four sided single person hide
deny essex
I have set up in the middle of rape fields when ive had to with a "roofed" hide shooting through a "window" section on one side of the netting, a bit restrictive for a full gun swing but that didnt bother the birds especialy thoose that came to land on the hide the last time i used it ! monkeyboots
ive found the stealth netting to be no use when decoying crows but good when at the woodies
mayfly36
MB its funny how different areas and situations occur, i use the stelath as well, but ive had no problems calling crows in when im behind it, as well as the woodies. monkeyboots
aye mayfly ive always used a old army surpuls net 1 my mate got for me from the TA and although it was a heavy clumsy net it worked a treat and i had many a good day at the crows with it, but back in the summer i bought a stealth net and hide poles it was a lot lighter and easier worked with than the old netting , but i could see crows flare away from quite a distance away and i still used the same decoys etc etc so i put it down to the new netting but as i said the woodies seemed to not notice anything
mayfly36
i found any movement at all behind the stealth net was a problem as far ad the crows were concerned. i learned to keep still.

chris o
i would say nickbeardo's way is my personal favourite and use it all the time even with a back drop i some times still use it.
30-6
I,ve set up loads of times in the middle of a field when circumstances dictate with good results. Give it a go and I think you'll be suprised how they come in. What I usually do in these hides is put a narrow roof at the rear to give a bit of cover from sun or being seen and throw a bit of local vegetation over it to give an uneven effect. Back earlier in the year I went out looking for birds and a field was being cut, I had the gun with me (12g), and had great fun shooting 5 rabbits as they bolted past the combine. A lot of pigeon were about, and I couldn't make my mind up the next day to have a go on the pigeons or the rabbits. So I compromised and took rifle and 12g, only took 6 decoys to have a go at both. They had baled the field straight away, as I had no hide I just sat leaning against a bale in the middle and although awkard shot 10 pigeon. An hour or so before dark I then swapped shotgun for rifle from the jeep which had always been in view, and walked the hedges and shot 10 rabbits. So yes you can set up "in the middle" and have fun.
