Ideally you'd probably want a mix of 7.5's 8's and 9's for sporting, and 9's for skeet.

If you only want to use one size i'd go for 8's. Will kill pretty much anything you're likely to encounter on a sporting shoot and plenty good enough for skeet.

Plenty of good budget cartridges about, Eley Firsts are very popular and a good cartridge, good kills and not too punchy. 28g/24g/21g will all do the job admirably.

If its going to be used by your wife and son i'm afraid most budget cartridges are usually 12g 28grm 7.5 which normally give a bit of recoil and for a your son and wife i would consider a lighter cartridge a 21grm would give less recoil and probably be cheaper i use 12g lylevale express HV 21grm 7.5s no noticable recoil and you can get them at a good price.try some out or look around at prices alot of people are moving to 21grm cartridges because of the above benefits.

Not a bad shell but if you don't dust the confetti hides any chips and on simmos or reports can confuse the eye.

I tend to use whatever the local shop has cheeeeep. Last lot I got was Sporter, a green cartridge in green box. 28g 7.5`s. Paid 120quid for 1000 which is about 3quid a box. Ive also tried the 21g version of these which are fine for skeet, but have to say i prefer the 28g`s for skeet & sporting.

Stay away from the 28gm cheap stuff ie; Kent Velocity or English Sporter, the recoil is far too much for someone learning to shoot.

Most 21gm loads are good and have relatively little recoil.

Someone who is just starting to shoot definitely does not need a cartridge that gives them a whack they have enough to learn, just hitting the clay can take a while.

Express 24gm are quite good too. Hull do some decent loads as well, have a look on their website.
