Hey everyone, im Ali and im new to the forum. Im 16 and have been shooting since i was 7. I've got into pigeon shooting over the last couple of years and love it. I live on a small farm in Cambridgeshire and only have winter wheat on the farm at the minute so theres no-where to decoy. The pigeons have flightlines on the farm and on a windy day u can really have some good shooting. As im now 16 i really want to get stuck it to pigeon shooting and gain some permission for myself. I have 1 farms at the moment and can't wait until the spring beans are sown soi can get out their and shoot some pigeon. :)

i was just wondering if their is anyone in the area that also shoots pigeon and where i could come with them decoying some time to gain some experince and see how really pigeon shooters do it. :)

Any advice or tips would also be great. thanks.

Ali.

Just as a suggestion, perhaps yourself, accompanied by your father/appropriate adult, could invite an experienced shot from the forum on to your permission for a days decoying when the time comes. Any offer like that would be appreciated and its likely to lead to the person returning the favour.

Either way, good luck and shoot safely.

hi there,

good luck with the search, hope you find some land,

can you not decoy the birds on your fields? if youve got a flight line you should be able to get them down even on a patch of grass.../ :)

hi there, it's a nice theory but i've tried it and the birds come out of the wood and only care about getting to their feeding ground, which i beleive is rape a few fields away. The birds take no notice of the decoys or even the magnet.

You can get them coming back from their feeding ground at the end of the day but you need a good wind (20mph+) from behind you to get them low and flying well. Over the past 4 months on weekends and after school i think i've shot around 40-50 birds. Normally around 5-6 each time (as im not the best shot and the birds are normally flying!) My best in a evening is 18 pigeon. :)

Thanks for the reply.

Pop over and speak to the farmer up the road and see if he would mind you shooting over his property , Make sure you take your insurance . If you have no insurance get this through BASC.

Cheers m8 but i've got BASC insurance and maybe i might just go and speak to the farmer down the road. Cheers.

On my bus journey into school each day i go passed a rape field packed with pigeon every morning without fail, and i can't seem to see any scares or gas guns around. As its half term next i think im going to find out who the farmer is and ask if i can control his pigeons ( or at least keep them off his land).

Is there any way i can find out who the farmer is??

im in exactly the same position as you mate. I am also 16 and on my farm (1000 acres) we only grow winter wheat and barley and use all other land as grassland or maizeland for the dairy unit we have. I Went to a local farmer mentioned who i was and that i'd seen big flocks of pigeons going on his rape and that i'd be quite willing to shoot them and try and keep them off. He was thrilled and is a really nice chap. I regularly phone him up and discuss where iam going to shoot and my tactics for the upcoming day and he's well into it although prefers driven pheasant  . He is a really nice bloke and because our land is right next to his then because he knew my dad and grandad it gave him a lot more trust for a 'youngun' to shoot on his land.

Mate, if you dont ask you dont get, go down there, be polite, call him by his title and be as polite as you can and make a good impression ??? I am sure he will let you shoot ???

Donnt despair, i too shoot flight lines and it is hard shooting, this Saturday i had a return of 2 pigeons for 20 shots, now thats bad ! in less than 2 hours, i now have a lesson booked on the clays !!

With regards permission, i had some business cards printed i have handed one out and got permission, i now have permission on another farm next door, though word of mouth, so things just fall into place with time. Once the word is out you are responsible shot you will have more permission than you can deal with.

With both farmers having land in different places i have three different areas to shoot from a zero start a few months ago.

I sympathise with your situation yd, i was in a similar position to yourself about 10 years ago. Now, through a lot of hard work and asking alot of farmers, i have several thousand acres to shoot on. If you were a bit closer i'd invite you on the peas in the spring. I hope you remain committed to the sport and i'm sure you will get the permission you require, soon. I introduced a neighbour to pigeon shooting last year, and he has 3 farms to shoot on now.
