al4x
Hi guys thanks for all the top advice. Yup I have the trousers and the gloves and the helmet etc. So I'm fully equiped safety gear wise but no saw! I have been told by a couple of tree surgens I know not to get a second hand saw as they are usually trashed. Is this true ? How could I tell anyway ? That said could I get a new saw that's a husky or Sthil that's got a 50cc engine for £350 ish? Cheers guys Will I'd never buy a second hand one and its simply you can't guarantee someone has mixed the two stroke correctly through the saws life. Have a look about online there are a large number of suppliers and prices are pretty competitive.
bothbarrels
Sthil in my opinion! we've had ours over 4 years, apart from the usual new chain and worn bar they've never missed a baeat!! BB.
utectok
Ok peps what about this one it falls within my budget http://www.chainsawspecialists.co.uk/acata...varna_450e.html I fancy a stihl one (MS260 as per some posts) but Just cannot find one within my price range (£350-400) Would thew 450m husky do? al4x
that will do you fine, for light use anything from their 235 upwards with a 15" chain will do the job, obviously the greater power does make life easier but it just depends how much you're going to use it. That looks a good buy, just dont go for the cheaper husqvarna's! the cheapos are made in the US by Oregon (I think), the higher ends are made in Sweden and generally have a far better build quality. Think its models 340 onwards that are Swedish. Edited February 18, 2010 by agusta
RC45
Definitely go for a Husqvarna, I find stihl chainsaws a bit flimsy, they just dont have the same solid feel the Husqvarna's have. but the more you pay, the better quality your getting... Nope! the 235's and 240's are made in SVEEDEN.... Just realised mine is a 240e not a 235e.... Edited February 18, 2010 by gixer1
Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
I prefer the stihl saws. I also prefer the older AV models over the current MS models I have a av084 alot more robust than my MS880. Regards OTH

Paul223
As many have already said Stihl or Husqvarna look to see which make has a dealer near you and go with that make , if the dearler does both go for Stihl
utectok
Oops maybe I didn't make it clear I just bought the one on the link Stihl ms 260 for £350 but looks mint ?
apache
I think you are mad getting a 2nd hand one. I'd recommend a Husky - I have a 240e, starts first time - cuts much faster than a Stihl.

farmboy99
you can get great second hand saws just have to be careful of their history ive always brought second hand and never had a problem. you've just got to find a private owner typically an old boy whos had it for doing bits around his big garden or for logs etc and now is too old to use it or someone whos converted to gas etc. like i said id try to find a 2nd hand 357xp it is the best saw. i have a ms260 too which is a great little saw but the huskies have to edge. its not until you get into climbing saws that stihl takes the limelight. for £350 you'll get a really nice 357 if you bung £100 on top you can probably get a brand new one if you shop about enough

utectok
Well I picked up the saw today and gave it a spin outside the sellers house, it seems to run fine an idles well to. Just a wee bit of choke on the first pull and off on the second. So hope it lasts me! Cheers once again for the help Will
