today 2 of us went on a local rape field and arrived at forst light set up hide and put out 6 shell decoys and 6 full body decoys in a U shape and withing 10 and were greated with a black cloud of atleast 1500 pigeons coming over us about 10 yards above our head and we managed 3 between us god knows were the 4th shot went we couldnt of missed , then about 20 mins later a few came over and managed 1 then there were birds about all day in flocks of a hundred or so constantly moving over us but all about 60 yards or so up and they would not come down into decoys so we changed pattern a few times to no avail any advice would be great i am new to shooting pigeons and any help would be great we are now thinking of a magnet or something to bring them down would this help

cheers

its just when we have had day on pigeons before we get maybe 3- 4 comming in every 20 mins but these were like 100 every 10 min flying straight over us as if we wernt there , we were wondering if they group up like that before mating etc like starlings do as the ones we shot didnt have full crops or anything

Watch the pigeons coming in. If they suddenly change direction or jink as the fly away then either your hide or decoy pattern needs to be altered. If they just continue flying in the same manner then they have other plans and aren't going to come into your field.

I have more or less the same problem so i know how frustrated you are but the standard reply does seem to be they will do what they damn well like

so just keep poking at them as long as you are getting some farmers happy they arnt sitting still eating his crops

yup I've seen lots, but with little wind and flying in large flocks they just aren't low enough,I had a frustrating day yesterday,i got 2 but they were really too high so I was wasting shot really, same field the other day,it was windy and they were coming in to start with ,then the rain wrecked the day, looking forward to a good windy dry day,

One of the first things i was told when i started pigeon shooting was not to shoot at large flocks......... :good::P

Ruined my day yesterday by doing this.

I was hid in a old cattle shelter, to the right was blind could not see birds until they were on to the decoys. The pigeons were coming from the left which was perfect, after about an hour four birds dropped in to the decoys from the right. Just as I pulled the trigger the rest of the flock appeared just behind them from my blind side. Never seen a pigeon for the rest of the morning so called it a day.

On the bright side at least I had enough for a couple of pie's.

mmmMMM! Pigeon Pie!

they were huge flocks near my a few weeks ago in lincolnshire. i went out got an escort and straight out to the fiels. they had all gone. tried 3 days on the trot but the odd big flock in the distance but that was it. had a crack at a few really high birds but was just feeding the clouds lead. got a few rabbits then hid under a row of conifers right behind the farm (no deeks) and got a few.

working over the weekend but fingers xed in the same spot with some deeks out might get into a few more.

happy hunting
