bicykillgaz
right i moved to where i now live just over a year ago and have struggled for land suitable for my .22lr but i've been offered the chance to go with someone on there permission to aventually gain the permission to shoot it my self which is great, the trouble is the person who i have been offered to go with only has an air rifle and is only aloud to take guests with air rifle and i don't have one! so i'm stuck with making the decision of either selling some stuff and buying a cheap smk thing with open sites for £95 new or £120 with scope i'm not too fussed which or sell my cz-452 varmint and all associated kit which i value around the £400 mark to fund a decent air rifle then re-applying for my fac at a later date when i have more suitable land i'm after you opinions and if i was to sell/swap the cz what sort of set-up should i look to buy, i know begger all about air rifle's in the sense i've used them but not owned any so not sure what i should look for gary Edited February 24, 2010 by bicykillgaz
HDAV
With the air thing is that a landowner issue or a clearance one? If its clearance then FAC air would be a better option even its a 28ft/lb springer rather than a PCP. for a decent 12 ft/lb springer you should pick one up for £100 http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/Det...+928&Filter[NewType][]=Air%20Rifle&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Break%20Barrel&Filter[NewMechanism][]=CO2&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Gas%20Ram&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Pre-charged%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Side%20Lever&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Single%20Stroke%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Spring&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Under%20Lever&Filter[Calibre][]=.22&Filter[Calibre][]=.177&Filter[Make][]=Air%20Arms&Filter[Make][]=BSA&Filter[Make][]=Venom&Filter[Make][]=Weihrauch http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/Det...+928&Filter[NewType][]=Air%20Rifle&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Break%20Barrel&Filter[NewMechanism][]=CO2&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Gas%20Ram&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Pre-charged%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Side%20Lever&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Single%20Stroke%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Spring&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Under%20Lever&Filter[Calibre][]=.22&Filter[Calibre][]=.177&Filter[Make][]=Air%20Arms&Filter[Make][]=BSA&Filter[Make][]=Venom&Filter[Make][]=Weihrauch http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/Det...+493&Filter[NewType][]=Air%20Rifle&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Break%20Barrel&Filter[NewMechanism][]=CO2&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Gas%20Ram&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Pre-charged%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Side%20Lever&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Single%20Stroke%20Pneumatic&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Spring&Filter[NewMechanism][]=Under%20Lever&Filter[Calibre][]=.22&Filter[Calibre][]=.177&Filter[Make][]=Air%20Arms&Filter[Make][]=Venom&Filter[Make][]=Weihrauch The last one would be my choice havign owned a BSA supersport, and HW95 and shot a TX200 the TX200 is lovely (this was 15 years ago...) I am sure there are soem much more qualified experts on here tho. Or http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...howtopic=115946 perhaps do a bit of plinking with the other chaps air rifle if you can to get an idea Edited February 24, 2010 by HDAV
bicykillgaz
its not a clearance issue its a land owner thing, i think because he's only got an air rifle the guy doesn't want him taking anyone with anything bigger as he's not got the experience when it comes to backstops and safety with rimfire to supervise, the land is cleared for upto at least .243 if not bigger, so it's a case of getting my face known and trusted, but the question is do i sacrifice the .22lr or just buy a dirt cheap springer? my mrs had a hw56 which i bought her but she got rid of it a few years ago i wish i'd kept it now but at the time had just got my fac and had loads of land so didn't have a need for it! vampire
Are ya mad Have a AAS410K .177 and is the best at rabbits on paddocks etc,am now applying for FAC so i can purchase a cz 22lr for all those out of range shots. Either get a permission or cheap PCP ultras are good OR both, but dont sell your cz surely youd regret it in the long run.
tweedledee
i`d opt for an air arms. cheaper than some others but accurate and well up to the task. there are more refined rifles out there but the 400 series will do all you need and more
Ozzy Fudd
get a cheap springer, get your face known, then take over with the .22lr - dont get rid of it, youll regret it Edited February 24, 2010 by Ozzy Fudd
HDAV
just buy a dirt cheap springer? I would get a cheap springer until you are known and then when the other guy realises what a rimmy can do you can mentor him....you may be able to borrow a springer for a while, unless you want to get into air then i would say keep an eye out for a TX200 great rifle which shouldn't loose much value on and dont have to worry about bottles pumps etc, and other faff just a tin of pellets and your off. I stopped air rifle shooting just as PCP really started to come in so really only used springers HW97 or TX200 would be my choice for a springer and both can be FAC if needed. HW97 is about 28 ft/lb when they leave the factory but get down rated for the UK Edited February 25, 2010 by HDAV
bicykillgaz
your right i know now i'd regret getting rid of my varmint so i think a cheap springer is the way to go i just need to fing some stuff to sell! i was after swapping a metal 10shot mag for the cz .22lr what would it be worth cash? its as new only been used a couple of times at the range, any ideas? George1990
Spending that money on an SMK would be false economy I reckon. Not used one but seen them and heard about them. I picked up a TX200 which is a quality gun for £150 with scope and slip etc so best off looking for 2nd hand bargain. This will outlast the smk ten-fold. This will outlast the smk ten-fold. I saw this: http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/promo/...lf+Price+RIGHT/ but a TX200 ala above is a much better rifle will last longer and can probably sell again for £150 in a year or 2's time anyway
gottsy boy
i'd keep the 22 rim mate and get a springer, it will also inprove the stalking as you have to get so much closer.
bicykillgaz
tx200 looks a good little gun what about a hw35? another forum member pm'd me regarding one but i think he lives too far away it would me rfd's and bump the price up but he offered me it for £100 which i thought was a good price

mfrcus
Hi if your gonna use it mostly for hunting your probaly not want anythging to heavy ,depending on how big you are .I'd go for a hw95 or a webley longbow .The airarms guns are very good but a bit heavier as are most underlever airguns .There are some much cheaper guns available & some are better than others but if you've got a limited budget your probaly better off getting a decent 2nd hand one .A shop localy has a hw80 with a scope for £110 & so your probaly be able to pick something like that up in your area .As for cal ,well thats up to you but either will suit your needs .cheers marcus
bicykillgaz
cheers for the advice everyone i'm definately not getting rid of the rimfire that is for sure, as for what sort of gun i'm gonna keep looking back through the guns for sale for inspiration there is a fair bit of choice! i'm leaning toward something second hand and along the lines of hw35/57/80/99 or a bsa lightening with a synthetic stock i'm not even fussed if its open sights as it will probably end up just getting used for a bit of ratting my mother in-laws neighbour has chickens and she keep seeing them in her garden (rats not the chickens!) plus she keeps getting tree rats after her bird food little grey fekers! i've got to find the cash first so i'm gonna have a rummage and see what i can find, i've not got much shooting wise that i don't use so thats a no go, i'm bound to find some treasures somewhere though. thanks HDAV and everyone for your ideas and suggestions i appreciate it atb gary Edited February 25, 2010 by bicykillgaz
