Cosd
My brother in laws garden is inundated with magpies. Though secluded, his garden is backed on by other gardens so shooting is out the question plus he doesn't shoot. Is there any decoys he could use, I'm guessing, would an owl decoy keep them away? Any ideas how he can get rid of them? they won't let any other bird near the place! Edited March 23, 2010 by Cosd
libs
Larsen trap baited with dog food, bread and broken eggs. Once you have a call bird, or better still a call bird from another area, you won't be able to keep up with the steady flow of the ****. Frenchieboy
A decoy owl would likely have an adverse effect. It might work to attract them for shooting while out in the field but in your back garden the maggies would most likely be even more noisy as they mobbed the owl! The Larsen Trap with a call bird seems the best answer for you my friend!
Paul223
A third vote for the larsen trap, pair of decent gloves and a priest no not that sort, knock over the head sort Edited March 24, 2010 by Paul223
Pigeon_snIPer
A pity, No. 6 would have been a real good solution :-) /s/
John_R
Presumably, a pair of magpies in a larsen are pretty noisy. Would that potentially cause neighbour trouble in this case?
Cosd
Presumably, a pair of magpies in a larsen are pretty noisy. Would that potentially cause neighbour trouble in this case? Yes it would. Plus there are so many of them, I've been there when there are over 30 birds going nuts in his garden! That's why I was thinking something along the lines of scaring them away rather than trying to catch them.
covlocks
Larsen and an Air Rifle or Pistol. Quiet and efficient.

Their noisy now whats the difference? just erect a blind or carry the larsen into a garage to save anyone seeing you knock em on the head, don't bother with airguns, just wear some gloves and bang em one with a priest / hammer stale, a 4 section larsen will potentially trap 3 birds each morning and may be some more during the day. alexr
Its easy to brake there necks if you don't have a priest Just pull on the head against counter pressure across the shoulders until you feel the crunch.

Dekers
Larsen remains the favourite! Shooting is seldom easy as they do a runner at distance, mind you I'm always happy if I can bring bown the odd one or two. Baiting and then hide shooting can work in some situations, but I go back to larsens! They are a real pain round here, a product of their own success! alexr
I agree that baiting works, but they are bright and you will only get one or two before they work it out.
