MC
Didn't see you first post, I would be up for that, Sporting Targets is a cracking ground and there is a pub down the road that does the best steak in the country (I would have said World, but I have been to Argentina)
Emmsy
any more info for those that dont get clay shooting mag??
Catamong
There was a flyer in one of the mags recently about the event, but it said Diddly Squat about the format, not even sure whether it's English Sporting, could even be Sportrap, no idea how many targets, so none the wiser. And, much as it pains me to disagree with MC , the ground is simply a flat field with a few earth banks and a couple of towers, very mediocre Sporting layout, OK for the Corporate Hooray Henry's, but as a serious Sporting venue, it doesn't cut the mustard, I'm afraid, not only that, it's in the back end of nowhere, you've got to go through the middle of Bedford to get there, it takes hours from any direction. paulos
I shot there last year and agree that it is a bit flat, and is almost certainly geared towards the corporate clientele, but the targets seemed pretty challenging and were definitely much better than me! :good:

MC
Oh Well I won't bother shooting this one then, obviously I wouldn't want to visit a flat mediocre field in the middle of nowhere. Despite it being a good ground with plenty of birds to catch everyone out (Except Cat who straights every shoot he ever attends, It must be boring getting 100 straights every weekend) The facilities are good and I didn't think it was that far out of civilisation (Except for it being in Bedfordshire) Aren't all grounds out in the middle of nowhere? Now I may have missed something when I was in Kensington the other day but I don't remember seeing a clay ground. As for Cat disagreeing with me, well there is a ******* suprise. If I said the world was round and the grass green then he would have something to say about it. As it is that uninspiring and mediocre I would expect all the usual "Glory Grabbers" to be out in force as there is a decent pot to be had. Mungler
I would go further in that when I shot Sporting Targets it rained heavily and my gun got completely soaked through. When I asked the nice people in the shop if they had a cloth handy, they just took my gun and gave it a clean and an oil for me [no charge] and they even took the chokes out and used the right graphite grease on the action! So, Sporting Targets gets my thumbs up if only for their very good customer service - above and beyond the call of duty. Incidentally, whilst it's a bit flat I didn't remember or notice the ground for being flat - I remembered it for the high tower birds that were great fun (and the nice people in the shop). MC
And that is the point entirely isn't it. It doesn't matter that the ground is flat, it is what they do with it that matters. There were several individual enclosures with their own set up in each as well as individual stands around the edge. I would also expect that they change it around for competitions so the birds are different. I forgot to add, I still have a lot to learn about this game so maybe the ground is poor and uninspiring. I just haven't been around long enough to realise that. Maybe when I am nearly in the veterans class I will be able to comment on issues like this Edited April 16, 2010 by MC

MC
Well i thought getting around as may different grounds as possible was the only to improve As did I Digweed but apparently when you learn a little more about this game you will realise that you need to go off to some uninhabitated part of Europe if you want a chance of winning a few cartridges. Yep, too right, we're all off to Portugal at the end of the month to shoot their Compak Sporting Grand Prix, a 200 birder over 8 layouts, quietly confident of a good result following my success in France. garyb
I've shot there a few times. Nice shop, great food and coffee.. To be honest I agree with Cat. The sporting is pretty poor - a couple of high towers, and a trap or two on top of a mud bank ? That said... I really enjoy the Compak and Skeet layouts there. You have not been there lately then, They had lots of varied stands and different layouts with multiple traps and shooting points. I must come and shoot in Hertfordshire sometime as everywhere else in the country is poor.
garyb
MC - Agreed, last time was about 9 months ago I don't shoot much in the way of clays
MC
Mungler, ME and myself were there less than a month ago and the investment in that ground must run into 10,s of 000's. To invest that sort of cash you must be doing something right. I must admit that after all these comments about Sporting Targets being poor I am expecting Hodnet to have Valet parking, a gentlemens lounge where only smoking jackets are allowed in. 5 star service all round and at the very least someone to carry my cartridges and clean my gun between each stand. And then there is the apres shoot drinks on the balcony
al4x
seemed ok last time I went there and that is probably 5 years ago if not more. But hey most of my clay shooting is done surrounded by strawbales so Sporting Targets was decidedly posh at that point
