pavman
So Farmers wife getting a tad upset keep finding busted eggs and flusterd hens with no visible damage to the run looked like a wil O the whisp was at work! Did a sit out keeping an eye and finally just before dusk last night this little Thief turns up and skips along to the run.... gave him a quick squeak on th Wam call enough to slow him up for a shot, maybe a bit OTT but Farmers wife is happy so Farmer is Happy and Pavman gets some good PR

alexr
Sorry Pav, but given that he almost certainly kept the mice and rats down I would have forgiven him the occasional egg
Benellimelody
Good do there - they can be pretty sneaky at times and do a lot of damage in some situations. They are lovely to watch and very clever but some people seriously underestimate what they can do. I once heard of someone digging one out to find approx 50 eggs from various species (Grouse, Meadow pippits - a couple of them) because they like to store food. (Not sure if all mustelids are the same but when i had ferrets they were little bugge** for hiding stuff) Well done Edited April 14, 2010 by Benellimelody

pavman
Sorry Pav, but given that he almost certainly kept the mice and rats down I would have forgiven him the occasional egg and you may well have, but it was farmers wife's eggs he was taking and she wanted it sorted, given they let me roam as i wish on there land I was not about to refuse her request for help. Under the circumstance I doubt anyone in my position would, If i cant protect her hens in a fixed location what chance the Game Birds SteveB the HMR from about 75 yards, he is showing his good side Edited April 14, 2010 by pavman

Frenchieboy
I think that this is a very good example of what I was saying on one of my earlier posts about making the decision to shoot or not and having to weigh up the entire situation. Whilst I decided not to shoot a weasel that was "entertaining" me because he was not causing any problems to anyone this little stoat was obviously causing some "concerns" for the farmers wife so I would say that it was right to shoot it. When all is said and done you have to respect the wishes of the farmer and his wife, after all they are the ones that allow you on their land to shoot in the first place. SSS
Good shooting pav. Like most have said, I wouldn't normally shoot one, but in the right circummstances, the job has to be done. All the best, SSS

hyflier
Nice shot, had to be done under circumstances. I had one recently working a ditch of rabbit burrows, it was fantastic, the rabbits would bolt out and sit 50 yards away to be safe from the Stoat, but alas not safe from my .17HMR The Stoat continued to work the warrens until he doubled back to find dead rabbits at the far end, he looked delighted, and I couldn't deny him the rabbit he nicked for a meal, after all - he did all the hard work
