Nice one bud. I was buzzing reading that. Cant wait to bust my first fox. I've only ever saw one once when i was out and it was just to quick. Never even had time to flick the safety on the shottie before it was gone.

Well done man

it was a .17HMR using hornaby v-max and im not good with distance but my dad who was sat in the drivers seat recons about 120 yards, i was aiming just over its head and it hit its shoulder so like you said tinytim, ill know to shoot that fraction higher next time, thanks for all the feedback lads its nice to share it with ya :whistling:

I have shot dozens of foxes with my HMR if i don't have the 223 with me i have mine zeroed 1" high at 100 yds and just aim spot on out to 125 yds..

That is the max range i will use it on for fox, most of them i have shot are roundabout 75 to 100 yds...

I only go for head shots and can honestly say i have never had a runner, unlike my 223 taking engine room shots ive had a few run... :good:

I was with Ryan (toolazydecoy) the other night when he shot his first fox/foxes. they were both ******g awesome shots. I've never shot one myself, but that's probably because he's always got the ******g rifle, but then he is a better shot than me.

We did see another fox on the other side of the permission but couldn't get a shot. It will be there for another day.

Ryan I spoke to the landowner (James) this morning and he was well chuffed. There'll be a few more partridges and pheasants for the gos to fly at during the season. WELL DONE son.

Ok not to pee on anyones parade but just to get you on the right lines!

The HMR works well on foxes but there is something wrong if you aimed above its head and hit it in the shoulder at that range it should be shooting pretty flat to there. Get yourself on some targets and set zero spot on at 100 yards then you can shoot anything from 15 yards to 100 no problem. I would try to stick to that sort of range and personally I do chest shots on foxes with mine as it gives a bit more leeway for error / wind. As said by Hawkeye if you shoot the vixen first then the cubs will all come back and you have the chance of getting the whole lot in one go. Keep up the good work

I wasn't saying that at all just if you can do it the other way. Then you have a problem with your setup that it shouldn't be dropping about 4" at that range hence the need for follow up shots and loosing one. Its purely to try and give you helpful advice on how to increase your kill ratio and do the job humanely. If you couldn't give a fig so to speak then fair enough and eventually you run the risk of a prosecution but you were at the upper limits of range and your shot wasn't going where it should.

Its not taking anything away from the shot or fox as you did kill two eventually but with a check of your setup you will find it a lot easier. Check the drop tables etc if you set it up right you just aim and shoot at that range no holdover at all.

Just edit your posts and remove the getting excited bits, as said it was purely helpful advice to get you on the right lines. Now for more of it, if you get out there and shoot a few rabbits and leave them where you think the foxes are appearing and they start being taken, keep doing it for a few days then go and sit where you can see your baited spot in the evening and I'll predict on dusk you'll get another one :good:

This is good advice and should be listned to instead of sounding off. If you take time to listen to GOOD advice you will improve and enjoy your shooting much more. Dont get to excited with your replies, pays dividends in the end

good shooting nice one. best way to test the drop of your rifle is put a target up take your time and see the drop at different distances. your soon get to no your rifle then. and the hold over your need on some shots.

keep the range down and your soon add more foxes to your bag. :good:
