beating for first time

Recommended Posts

On a well organised shoot, the beat captain "should" tell you which direction you're driving and where the guns will be. Then you just try and keep in a line, keep an eye out to either side and make sure you're not going too far ahead or behind everyone else. If a flurry of birds go up the line will usually stop as the guns will need to reload and they won't want more birds coming out until they're ready.

As said above, it's a good day out and usually some good laughs to be had, I actually prefer beating to shooting driven game.

As others have said, stick to the line and if too many birds come up in one go stop. Everyone else will be the same so just copy them. Beating is a great day out and I'm looking forward to next season having only done one shoot myself. I really enjoyed it.

If you want some bunny bashing it's a great way to get in. You never know they may even invite you on a beaters day later too?

You will really enjoy it mate.

Thing to consider.

1). A stick that is about 4' long with a 'V' at the top. Hazel is best. (The shoot may supply sticks and flags)

2). Flask and sandwiches. Some shoots provide lunch.

3). Thornproof/waterproof leggings.

4). Thornproof gloves.

5). Wellies.

If you pick up an injured bird then dispatch it immediately with a knock on the head with your stick. Don't try wringing its neck because it's too easy to pull the birds head off and guns don't like to be presented with headless birds.

Beating for Rabbit shooting sounds like a good trade to me.

Some shoots offer a beater's day at the end of the season when you may be invited to shoot. These are sometimes ' Cock bird only' shoots to thin out the number of Cock Pheasants that are competing for the Hens in the new breeding season.

I love beating. I'd ratherbeat than shoot game anyday.

Other than the above good advice, just a word about dogs. If you are intending taking a dog make sure it is totally under control even if that means it being on the leash. There's no quicker way to blot your copy book than letting your dog run in.

Hope that you enjoy it.

p.s. KFC for got to add:

6. Bag for the mushrooms, sweet chestnuts, sloes and other goodies you will find ;)

The only thing I would add to the list is some shotproof safety glasses. You can get quite a lot of shot falling on you. The temptation to look up can be overwhelming if you want to see how many are getting hit.

I recommend safety proof shot glasses instead... sloe gin! :good:
