SNAKEBITE
I apply the same rules as with anything else. Just because you CAN shoot it doesn't mean you SHOULD shoot it! If the jays are plentiful and causing a nuisance then fine pop 'em off. Make sure you pass on the feathers to a fly fisherman though! Nothing wasted then. If you only have a couple flying around then leave them.

Highlander
Agree with SNAKEBITE on this one...just 'cause you can etc etc. In our neck of the woods they're fairly scarce so we don't shoot them. In any event they're not half as bad a mags. Good fly tying feathers though.
BountyHunter
We are inundated with them and Maggies, if I sit and look out of the patio doors I will guaranteed see half a dozen Jays and or Maggies in less than 10 mins. When I am out walking for rabbits I can hear them all bickering all over the farm, noisy bu66ers! BH
Ferret Master
Hi, I have only a few around and enjoy seeing them and I know they aren't as bigger pest as the Magpie because they distribute lots of acorns every Autumn. henry d
I saw 2 working a hedge a few years ago and decided to try a Larsen trap and I decided to bait it with a dummy nest and eggs.First day i had a jay in the side with the nest and another in the other side too. In a week I had 8 and with the wings I got discount on my scope at the local gun/tackle shop and the ferrets had the bodies.
mel b3
i agree with what's been said already, you shouldn't shoot them just because you can, one of my shoots is also a pheasent syndicate so i try to keep the numbers as low as possible but on my other shoots i leave them alone, having said that , if the numbers got out of hand on my other shoots i would thin them out a bit. Catamong
Not too many in my area at the moment, I remember back in the 80's we were overrun with them one winter, when loads migrated here from Scandanavia. They are generally pretty dumb birds, and relatively easy to stalk, as they will frequently offer a simple crossing shot out of their sitty tree instead of a hard, diving going away shot that a magpie would always opt for when surprised. I wouldn't go out of my way to shoot them, but if one comes within range, as Invector would say "If it flies...it dies..!!" Catamong
white fox
Saw one once and shot it in our wood some five years ago, never seen another since in the wood. I don't think I would shoot another one, unless they come back in big numbers like BH has. On a similar note, we have a few hare and I like to see them, so we leave them alone.
