mossy835
well for a start you will need a rotor or they will have job to see your decoys, if you have movement in the patern it will be better.
Down South
Take a broom with you if its snowed again. You can then use the broom to clear snow from the rape where you want the birds. It takes a bit of time but if you have set up over the only green patch around you might well have a very good day.
M.G.
Evening All, Been out today (Essex) and shot 33 over rape. It was mainly covered in snow but in places was in the lee of a wood and not so bad; in these areas the woodies were hitting it quite hard. Big flocks though and easily spooked. Used 2 magnets and about 20 shells, the birds that showed interest committed to the pattern and came right in. Quite a good day although very cold and at times very slow. I recommend you give it a go but get movement in your setup, without this it will be very hard work to get any interest..........
ronttuk
dont forget your own needs i take a small amount of hay/straw with me to put in the hide it stops the cold getting to your feet and dont forget a warm drink
Fisherman Mike
Some of the best shooting ever can be had over snow covered rape fields particularly after a prolonged cold snap. The birds have to feed daily or they loose weight pretty quickly in the winter. If they have been feeding on this particular field dont worry about a covering of snow. Just make sure your decoys are well well placed and conspicuous. There are some huge flocks around at the moment. In this area Ive have not seen such big flocks since the late 70,s the cold weather has really brought them together. Only this afternoon I watched in amazement as some 5,000 plus birds descended on a 35 acre rape field on the Bathurst Estate which is very close to The Royal Ag College and when I drove a further mile along the road towards Cirencester I saw another huge flock taking to the woodland. Tomorrow Im shooting at Fairford where more large flocks have been hitting the rape and I expect the field to be partially snow covered. Give it a try its better than staying indoors. FM. Good idea with the broom, ill definately take one tomoz, also thanks for the idea of using straw. Here in Suffolk the snow has fallen a fair bit and they birds are in groups of up to 500 or so from what i can see. i love it when a big cluster come over and start to descend. wish me luck ill let ya know how i get on
