Deerstalkerlunt
I am very new to reloading, I recently went to my local gun shop to buy some reloading componants as mentioned in title hornady 58gr Vmax in .243 and he didnt have any of the powders I was recommended such as varget. But he said this reloader 7 powder can be used with the 58 grainers, he looked in a few books and could only find 60 grain bullets compatible with this powder but he said to start off at 28 grains of powder and increase upto a maximum of 30 grains! But I cant find anything in any of the reloading manuals as to what specification to use this powder, I dont want to break my rifle after all the work I have put into getting it perfect! Can someone point me in the right direction! Cheers
kent
Ok, will have a look on quickload. However please, please get someone to talk you through the process reloading can be dangerous and you must be fully aware of what you are doing and what to look out for. Starting too low is as bad as starting too high and other things besides the powder charge can have an effect on pressure. If you PM me tommorow i should have some data
kent
ok according to quickload and i can bear no responsibility for this data the max is around 35 grns of reloader 7 with the hornaday 58 grn v-max. This suggests your start load is too low BUT your own gun might not be safe with 35 grains either. I am very familiar with the .243" win but this is not a load i should suggest 70-75 grn bullets are better for fox only in my opinion 85- 95 for fox and deer with the best powders being H4350 and Vhit N160 most usually. Have the importers of this powder not got data to cross reference USE THIS DATA AT YOUR OWN RISK, please get someone to help you hands on certainly at the begining
Mr_Logic
RL7 is too fast for 243. Stick with slower powders like H414, AA4350, H4350. varget and RL15 can work, but they are only good for light bullets.
Graham M
Reloader 7 is great in .222 but is too fast for a .243. I wouldn’t recommend using 58grn bullets in a .243 anyway as they have to either be seated too far off the lands or they are stuck out of the case too far in order to reach. Why don’t you try 70grn BT/HP and 45grns of H414. Better than ANY 58grn bullet by a long chalk. G.M.

Deerstalkerlunt
Cheers for the help! The shop I bought it all from never has anything in stock and me being impatient just bought the 58 grainers in a rush and the only powder he thought suitable was what he provided me with. He didnt have any Hodgsons powders in at all because apparently hecant get hold of them. I actually wanted some 85 grain sierra game kings but he said he cant get hold of them, can I order off midwayuk and have them sent to him? Graham M
Can he not get 95 or 100grn bullets??? Your 243 should be able to handle those well enough with a 1-10 twist. Failing that can he not get you some PPU stuff to play with G.M.
Deerstalkerlunt
He did have some 100gr in, but I had never heard of them before and he got them out the box and they looked a mess, like they all looked completely different and I cant even remember what they were called. When you ask him if he can you get it he just says ohh its been really difficult to get hold of any of it but I have heard rumours he may be closing up so possibly he just wants rid of his stock. My gun prefers 85grain upto a 100gr, I have fired 75 grain remington accutips and it did not like them but that was factory ammunition. al4x
if you look on the midway site they have a list of dealers who will usually accept them, always worth a try
mikee
Ive use 75gn v-max in my .243 and they turn charlie to soup, but can be seated far enough into the case and still get close to the lands, bette than 58gn mikee
Deerstalkerlunt
I have just found on the internet that for a 60gr Sierra hollow point it recommends 30.2gr of reloader 7. Could I use this load data for the 58gr, as I am sure thats what the guy in the shop actually found in one of his books. Could 28gr of powder be too little to start off??? I think I may take a trip down to my gunclub and ask the RFD in there as he definetly more clued up than the guy who I purchased off. Plus I should of bought through my gunclub OH well! 6br
Hi there as already stated reloader 7 is to fast for the .243 and is the ideal powder for the .222. if you want to use 58gr v-max in .243 try varget , vit140 or reloader 15. I've tried allot of different weights in my .243 and like the 58gr v-max but everybody to there own.

Vince Green
This is a problem with loads of dealers these days , no stock of anything and full of excuses. But don't give up.
njc110381
I couldn't be doing with that sort of treatment! Ok, you can't expect them to get everything but it's not often I ask in my local to be told "can't get that"? Is there not another dealer locally who's willing to help you? To be sent out with bullets 20 grains lighter than what you asked for and the wrong powder for them just isn't on!
jamie g
my mate uses 58 grain vmax and varget with great accuracy. i can tsee why alot of you say they sit back far from the lands. surely if there accurate that doesnt matter how far off the lands they are. or are you worried about throat wear
6br
the 58gr v-max in my .243 are seated 60 thou off the land but still produce great accuracy, I know allot of reloaders who reload there ammo to saami spec and get very good accuracy. The RFD has to pay for ammunition if its to be sent to him, the only ammo that can be sent directly to you is match stuff. Decide on a load you want to start playing with that but don't just mix up what you can get thats available, thats just asking for trouble and accuracy headaches. Make a list of what you would like and go for a drive around, it may take a bit of distance but the great thing about reloadin is that you can stock up on what works and not rely on a RFD, thats if you have the amount on your license.
