docholiday
Thing is though, I would have no problem using up 100 pigeons. And I know plenty people who would take any excess and that is the best outcome doc

Stretch
Just don't shoot more than you can use. It's not exactly complicated. Edited August 17, 2010 by Stretch
docholiday
PS would be doubtfull about putting food into the food chain when it may have been lying in the sun for several hours. at this time of the year I find that the flies are on the pigeon within a few mins of them hitting the deck. if you plan on eating them I wouldnt leave them on the floor but would pick them as soon as shot and place in a cool box. doc

Evil Elvis
Personally I use dead birds in the pattern and not sure I'd eat any that have been in the sun all day, Couldnt agree more, any i use as decoys in the sun get left for charlie!!! In the bushes.
PaulABF
I use hessian sacks - army issue sandbags - to keep the birds in while I'm shooting. I'll use a few in the pattern and the rest go in the sack in the shade. Air gets to them but flies don't. The flyblown decoys get put in the fenn traps or in the bin. Harnser
Fly eggs are not normally a problem on your birds as they can be brushed off and any that you miss will soon be killed off in the freezer . Your main problem this time of the year is the heat and it will soon turn your birds if they are left in the sun . check the birds vents when you have picked up at the end of the day . Any sign of green around the vent the bird has started to decay ,get rid of it . Game dealers dont like green bums . Harnser .

activeviii
I NEVER waste them, i've always given them away to anyone who will take them, even the messy ones get used by a friend who owns buzzards (or something like them). The thing is i'm starting to get bigger bags and its become more difficult to shift them. Plus it's getting expensive so could do with finding someone to buy them. be carefull with lead shot birds if feeding the raptors as you will poison them. none toxic loads only. i was speaking to Will Oakley at the CLA and he would pick frozen birds up if in a fair quantity. 100+. offering 24p frozen. i use roger quality foods in fairford as he gives 28p but i do have to take them as he dosent collect. speaking to roger in the week and he tells me that willo game have called in the receiver's, how true this is i dont know but there web site has gone. might be worth a phone call though. 01588 650539 Nr bishops castle, shropshire. Sauer
whatever you do dont dump them its not an option unless fly blown but as other have said still have uses in magnets or fox bait etc. if your relatively new but dont have contacts to sell then i strongly suggest you buy a chest freezer doesnt have to be a big thing. with this economic climate and cost of everything then at least your getting good quality unprocessed natural meat!!!! and plenty receieps on this forum!!! our sport and other fieldsports are under enough of a threat without people just shooting for hell of it and dumping the end result sauer
rigwallet
On a more serious note , I had a pigeon vindalo a few evenings ago . , As follows : INGRIEDIENTS: 2 Onions 4 Cloves of garlic 1 Piece of ginger 4 Large tomatos 6-8 Pigeon breats 8 Tablespoons of balsamic vinegar 1 Tablespoon of honey( the runny stuff) CURRY PASTE: 1 Tablespoon Tumeric 3 Tablespoons Groundnut oil 2 Tablespoons tomato puree 1 Teaspoon Black Peppercorns 4 Cloves 2 Teaspoons coriander seeds 2 Teaspoons of Fennel seeds 1 Teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. 1-2 Teaspoons of chilli powder or 2-3 chillies METHOD: Dice onion , garlic and ginger and sweat in a pan for about ten minutes. While this is bubbling away toast the black peppercorns, cloves ,coriander seeds ,fennel seeds and fenugreek seeds in a dry pan for around 30-60 secs . (its important that you dont let them burn as they will go bitter but they need to toast so keep an eye on them) once theses have toasted bung them all in a pestle and mortar and smash to pieces . Add the rest of the spices and groundnut oil to make your curry paste. Now chop up your pigeon and chuck in the pan and fry for a few minutes with the onions and garlic .Then add the curry paste and let it fry for about 30 secs then chop up your tomatoes and put in the pan with the balsamic vinegar ,honey and 400ml of water or stock if you prefer . Cover with the lid and bring to the boil. Once it has boiled lower to a simmer and cook for about 45 mins - 1 hr. Then take the lid off and allow to reduce into a wonderfull sticky vindaloo gravy. Dont be tempted to add cornflour or any thickening agents as the curry will do this itself. And the spices need time to cook down. Pigeon vindalo Yum Yum !!! Gettin a bit to posh on here pigeon vindaloo ok but you forgot to tell us what rice naan bread and starter and when can we all come to your house so you can cook us all one

Stretch
Nice sentiments but arn't we getting away from the fact that this is pest control, not shooting for fundoc Well, i can't honestly say that i soley go out on the field to control pests. I go out because i love the sport, i love being out in the countryside and whilst i'm there i shoot as many of the little b******* as my shooting ability permits which in turn results in me controlling pests. End result is that I'm happy, farmers happy, everyones happy. What i meant by not wasting a life, is if i've ended it's life i see it as my responsibilty that its put too use in some way even though they are pests and i'm starting to hate the ******* things.
