king ratcatcher
hi,i use an opinal, but the blades seem to loosen the sharpness quite quickly, whats the best hunting knife in your opinion, cheers lee

Zapp
Kingratcatcher I too use an Opinel, and would rate them the best, in spite of the fact as you rightly point out they lose their edge quickly. I simply carry a small steel and give it a quick swish each time I use it. Pete (Edited due to the fact I was replying to the wrong person...Doh!) plexer
You'd better edit your post to remove the link to that website as that would be classed as advertising a company on here. Ben

plexer
Sorry devilishdave has posted a link to a website but as other threads that contained contact numbers for gunshops etc... that could supply what a member wanted have been edited to remove these non paid for advertising links I thought the same would apply here? lurcherboy
Your knife is only as good as the sharpening method you use. LB

henry d
Opinel for me I still have the first one I owned from the early 80`s,it has been sharpened that many times that it is un usable now. They`re cheap so if you lose one it won`t cause tears, easily sharpened(remember if it blunts easy it sharpens easy, and vice versa)and the new versions lock in the shut and open positions so is safe, however a full tang knife is stronger but you have the problem of the thing hanging off your belt all the time and giving you a poke every time you cross fences or when crawling! Just curious, LS
Devilishdave
I dont think there are any legal import restrictions on knives but you may have to pay import tax. Best to get the sender to tick the gift part on the customs declaration. I will let you know when mine arrives in the next week or so Dave Edited January 8, 2006 by Devilishdave
SNAKEBITE
Get the sender to declare "gift" on the package. No tax. As L.B. said it is not the knife but the sharpening method. I use one of the ceramic "X" shaped bobbins. Very good and only £5.

The limitation of this if lost the maximum claim is $50, not a problem with a knife or similar but if you trying that for more expensive goods think before you do it... Let us know how you get on getting your knife over Dave, I would like to try buying from the States.
marlin.45
I use the Lansky pro knife sharpening system. Bit 'complicated' to set-up at first but you can set the blade edge angle to suit the application of the knife. Dug all my old blades out and now have a pile of sharp knives again For deer etc. the I'd recommend the Gerber Freeman. Either fixed blade or folder. Winchester do a fixed blade (claimed to be made by Gerber?) that retails at £20 which is also good. See Link For rabbit paunching etc. these Scandinavian fishing knives are good and inexpensive too.
