Newsportshooter
That was exactly my point - there is no legal obligation and it could potentially cause more confusion. Gents - do what you feel best. This seems to be a perpetual and subjective post......... In response to this last comment - If you call them and let them know your shooting and are worried that someone might us you as an alibi - then just call them again when your done and let them know your finished - Simples. Lets face it its only tax payers money thats wasted when the chopper and several arvs are despatched to incidents...... - you could argue that the cars are already on duty so very little expence but the chopper - now that costs a bit to get in the air... Rogan Josh
I don't and never will, there is no reason to do so. With you all the way on that. Just because they offer the noose doesn't mean that you have to willingly place your head in side it.
Vince Green
There is another way of looking at it, a bit obscure but worth considering. If you get known to the local force for what you do you you might get your details passed on to other landowners. The local boys talk to a lot of people in the course of their work. If I was a farmer with a rabbit problem one of the things I would do is ask the local bobby if he knows anybody who is reliable. Our club, when I was secretary, used to get quite a few new members from being recommended by the local force. al4x
the reason i asked this i because i was reported last night and police came. they told me to inform the police when i was there, so i asked him this question... what if i phone in and say that i will be on land with my rimfire between ,say, 7 and 9 pm, but at 815 i decide to go home.. when i have just left the land a poacher comes and shoots at a couple of rabbits with his rimfire, misses them and the bullets ricochet through someones window, and he legs it. would i be held responsible as i have told you im there..he actually said that i would have to ask this to the flo.. i think best to just have all your permission slips and tel nos with you at all times. its simple you call it in and then call in to close it as well so you shouldn't have that occuring
Dekers
I don't and never will, there is no reason to do so. nope never shouldnt have to With you all the way on that. Just because they offer the noose doesn't mean that you have to willingly place your head in side it. Guys, it really isn't as black and white as that, as you all know and as many have responded, there is not necessarily any reason to advise the police in MANY situations, you need to look at each case on it's merits. For example, if you were dealing with a problem next to a motorway or railway or housing or school etc, etc and walking around in clear view with a gun you would probably be wise to advise the Police. If you continued with this activity after assorted armed response callouts you would find if hard to get your FAC/SGC renewed (indeed it may already have been removed from you), it's very simple, it comes under the heading Not a suitable person! I have a lot of land and I am called to deal with all sorts of issues in all sorts of locations, including peoples back gardens, I am faced with this a lot! I don't believe anyone here is seriously suggesting you need to call the police every time you grab your gun on your Highland estate or go for a stroll round your own farm though! ATB!! natcot
Never phone in, but recently a mate aquired some new shooting permissions at a local sports club, fairly exposed to the public (main road etc) and a few local houses. Within an hour we get a visit from a local copper with dog! We get told to put weapon on the ground, hands to the sides etc. The dog is very excited and after the copper calls in our details etc all is fine, we even have a joke about seeing how far my mate would get if he made a run for it!!! We've got FAC's with us, and permission letter etc and everything is fine. He asked us to call local station in future, and to be honest that's what we'll do (only for this permission though). We really couldn't do with having them come out to us every week. Also, once he'd gone, the rabbits didn't not come back out, we waited a good hour and there was no sign of them. bigstevouk
Wise words Dekers, was thinking of a similar reply but i think you have hit the nail on the head....... Cheers
Vince Green
I don't see its that much of a problem phoning in. I'm sure the police have got better things to do with their time than wasting an hour going out chasing up reports of men with guns. While they are out checking you out they are not doing more useful work.. In rural areas the copper that gets sent to you might be the only one on the ground for miles. Look at it from their point of view. While you have then tied up there might be somebody somewhere nearby who really needs them urgently.
