dont know what caliber you are applying for but regardless ask for expanding, I was politely reminded by my feo at my last renewal that I had not stated expanding and he added the words to my forms, so basically dont assume.

True, forgot about the target bit.... :good:

On the form I was told to state expanding ... fragmentable etc and solid falls within that rather than specified. I guess target only don't ask for anything other than solid?

Bit of an odd one this - I never specified expanding ammo when I applied for my .17HMR but did of course put down for use on foxes and vermin in which case the use expanding ammo (for this calibre anyway) is all but a given - and whoever processed the application knew this and entered it on my license automatically . That said when my licence comes up for renewal in February I will certainly be adding the words myself just to be totally sure that it's not left out.

I've hardly given the expanding / non expanding wording a second thought for over 4 years but fairly recently I happened to have a chat with a friend who is a member of a local gun club who seemed genuinely interested in the .17hmr. After asking some probing questions about the calibres performance he suggested I ought to go to one of their club range days as his guest to see what it can really do when you don't have to wory about clean kills etc - (it's not really my type of shooting but none the less I thought I'd look into it). The chat got me thinking about my licence conditions (approved land etc initially) but then happened to remember the bit on the application form about expanding ammunition not being legitimate for target use (or words to that affect) which rules out the remmington boat tails and even the CCI hollow points I have... that got me thinking and googling for what non expanding bullets there actually are for the .17hmr which eventually led me onto finding out about FMJs - which I believe are the only non expanding round suitable for target shooting? and that's about as far as I got with it. A few weeks later the FAO was out to check the cabinet and approve my SGC application so thought I'd ask him where I would stand should I ever choose to take the man up on his offer to visit the range but quite surprisingly (I thought at the time) I seemed to know alot more about it than the FAO did??? (and I was/still am pretty clueless about target shooting TBH) - he assured me that I could buy and use non expanding ammo along with expanding ammo as per my license conditions (which I already knew) but when I mentioned that FMJs might be the only option for true, non expanding bullets I was met with a "OH NO, you can't use them, their only for the military" at which point I realised I wasn't going to get much sense and explained that I'd obviously have to do some more research before ever thinking of going to the range and that was that.

I've not bothered looking into it since but I do still wonder what others use when / if they visit a range?

it depends what the range envelope is set at as to wether or not u can use it there, most pistol/gallery rifle ranges are around 1755fps with a .455 max calibre. So I can't use my .17 at any of my clubs,(17hmr is around 2200fps) I can use it at short siberia and mod ranges, yes I use the cci 20gr fmj, but only 100/200,after that it gets real tricky!,as for expanding,u can use expanding if you are using the guise of zeroing a particular bullet I think, but most would realise u were taking the mick if that was all u were shooting, I.e. U only had expanding ammo. most important u must not use target or fmj on quarry.

I asked about using expanding ammo at bisley and they said there was no problem as long as you met the velocity and ft/lbs criteria BUT it could not be used on electronic targets although he had no idea why not.

i was told that a while ago - but since then every time i've been there, there's been no issue with using expanding on the running boar/deer electronics targets (it may be different on the statics).

I didn't specify expanding as I was told by BASC that a vermin condition should automatically generate the addition of expanding too.

Came through no problems.

That is bad advice from the BASC, they know fully well and should have advised you to list expanding ammo if you wanted it, take nothing for granted on a FAC, if you want it, list it! :good:

Deer is the ONLY thing you are legally bound to use expanding ammo on in the field.

Whilst many would advocate expanding ammo on all live quarry, and I use it almost exclusively, it is by no means essential and solid lead or FMJ is very lethal, ask anyone in the military, thats what we give all our forces!

Any requirement to use solid or expanding ammo of any calibre is down to the rules of any given range/club/competition.

With regard your FAC you cannot use your rifle for target shooting unless it is conditioned for target use. Unless you are a member of an approved club your conditions of use are likely to be Vermin control (whatever wording they choose) and zeroing, and not target.

And your FEO seems to have a lot to learn.

If the range allows expanding ammo there is no reason why you cannot spend a session there zeroing your expanding ammo for field use, indeed, even if they only allow solid ammo, then buy some and zero that to. As I have said, you can shoot anything you like in this country with NON expanding ammo except deer!!
