DSPUK
We did some daft and looking back dangerous things - we mixed weedkiller and sugar and made small bombs out of Halibut capsil containers -- At time- where we lived there were some big air raid shelters - thick brick and foot thick concrete roof - little brother took one in and lit it - instead of coming out he stood behind blast wall - don't think he could hear properly for a week. I made a gun out of gas pipe - mounted on block of wood - lit fuse (straw packed with the mixture) and stood there waiting for it to go off - at last minute I decided to move round corner - boom - nothing left and threaded sleeve and stop plug landed 50 yrds away. Stopped playing with it then- just got to the point I was old enough to realise I could have killed myself. Dave

Picking carrier bags full of mushrooms and selling them by the bagfull to the little market shop in castletown, then going and waiting outside the cycle shop for someone to go in and buy me air rifle pellets. Cutting and flogging logs to local pensioners. Collecting all the empty pop bottles from the biulding sites, and a few we knicked from out the back of the whitey and getting the refund on them. Beatall pellets ? The ones around in my day were Beatall, Wasp, Marksman, Pylarm and cat slugs (non waisted) Cartridges were, Blue and Red Rivals, Yellow Wizards, Sellier and Bellots, Eley Maximum, Alphamax, Grand Prix. You only needed a 10 shilling gun license from the post office for air rifles and shot guns. You didn't need anything to buy pellets or cartridges. This was in early sixties. Andy .177 pellets were 6d a hundred in those days (2.5p) Edited October 16, 2010 by Doggone
manxman2
well it was 8p for a school dinner ticket, and i had to sell a weeks worth of them for a box at the time {then live on a bag of carrots or apples for dinner}. i used the paper/cardboard sellior belliots in my youth. them mainly stuck to eley. i remember running short in the car, so instead of going all the way back to the other end of the island i went into a garden centre and asked for 2 cartons of grand prix/;impax 7s, old boy comes back from stockroom with 50 shells, so i says no 2 cartons 500, he say bl00dy hell boy what you going to do start a war {country folk}. i was paying around £100 a thou then cant remember exactly i was getting my cartridges free thru a bounty system mainly, maybe a little less. we always used to say 10p worth of lead sorted that one out. turbo33
Coming home from school and having Junket for pudding, Nicking the cider bottles from the back of the 'offy (with the bakerlite screw tops) and taking them back in for the deposit Fish finger sarnies when it was real cod and not some reconstituted emulsified muck My first airgun, bsa meteor in the most grogeous presentation box with manual, oil, and a solid steel target holder re enacting the 'Dambuster@ with air rifle pellets on the canal next to our house. Really annoyed the fishermen My first shotgun, greener gp with the martini action. The smell of the first cartridge, paper cased, will never leave my memory. Grandfather selling his purdey db, sbs, hammer, damascus barrels leather case, selection of Purdey cartridges and getting enough to buy his dearly beloved a new washing machine and matching dishwasher by Indesit

bruno22rf
When i was 12 a mate and me managed to buy a double .410 from an elderly lady (£4) by telling her that we would take out the firing pins and hang it on the wall.Within a couple of days we had blagged some empty shells from the local poacher and got our hands on a box of 12,s.Using a pair of pliers and various other impliments from the kitchen we managed to reload the .410 shells using toilet paper as wadding and a blob of sealant in place of the crimp. We shot loads of rabbits this way until the local bobby got wind of what we were up to and eventually caught us red handed-great days, where are you now Eddy?
