garyb
Right... Just like rifle ammo, I've had enough of the poor stock that most RFD's in these parts seem to hold of decent 20 bore game cartridges. I'm looking to begin reloading for my shotgun. (Should mention I already reload for rifles in 243 and 308, so have powder scales etc) Can someone in the "know" offer some pricing on what the following typical consumables would cost me per thousand? I know... it would be more cost effective if I was shooting non-tox blah blah.. but I'm not. If turning out 1000 shells on the press costs me the difference of +- £10, then in my book it's worth it just for the reduced hassle factor of touring RFD's looking for the damn things. I haven't looked into any load data yet.... but please assume I need the following... 20 Bore 28grm of #6 65-70mm case Fibre Wad How much are we looking at per thou for Primers Shot Powder Cases (assuming I've binned all my others) I plan to buy a lee load all 2 if that makes any difference. Thank you!
al4x
I reckon you'll be single shortly if you take this one up! its got to be a lot more tedious knocking out shotgun shells in quantity than dealing with just cartridges!! Does make me wonder whether we ought to do the occasional herts group buy and one of us go and pick them up
MC
Gary, I reload 12B cartridges and it does work out slightly cheaper as you well know you can reload a better product than you can buy. You cannot reload as cheap as say an Eley First clay load but you can reload a High performance cartridge like an Express World Cup cheaper with equal if not better performance. The costs of my last lot of gear was Red Dot Powder £22 per lb Primers CX2000 £30 per 1000 Fibre wads £38 per 1000 Card fillers £12 per 1000 Shot £73 per 25KG I load 24gr cartridges for shooting clays so get just over a 1000 out of a bag of shot which is by far the dearest part but on average you can reload a cartridge for around 20 - 25p depending on what you put in it. Edit, I use a Lee load all as well, and once you get in the groove it is very easy to load 100 an hour. Floating Chamber
Mmmm. sounds expensive. I think I'll give it a miss!
sitsinhedges
17 grains of A1 = 3.75p Lawman CX2000 = 3.3p Lawman 15mm fibre wad and nitro card = 4p Claygame Shot home made 2.8p Scrappie This makes a very mild shooting 28gram load for about £140 less any further savings you can make. Don't waste your time trying to crimp second hand 20g cases, cut 70mm down to 65 and RTO but still use the machine to do all the other stages
garyb
All very interesting. Not sure I can be botherd with making my own shot... I don't cast rifle bullets for the same reason!

Does make me wonder whether we ought to do the occasional herts group buy and one of us go and pick them up I'd be up for that. I shoot with 2 others and would be in for a 28gr fibre wad clay cart. Am going through a few at the moment trying to find one I like. Once done there'll be at least a 3-5000 requirement from us. I don't mind picking up but I don't think my car would like it too much...! Could also be in for some 32gr 5/6 fibre wad.

Guest cookoff013
if you are loading lots, get a progressive press. for the 20bore it will be alittle more saving, than say a 12bore. use european powders to make it cheaper, £15, for .5kg (1 lb is 454g) if your loading for "game" go middle of the road, 6s unless partridge is the main game. then 7s would be it. 5s for high phesent. i`ll dig out some data. http://www.nobelsport.it/public/pages/ENG/...mp;FamigliaID=0 20b 28g cartridge going 1400fps. http://www.nobelsport.it/public/pages/ENG/...mp;FamigliaID=0 gm3 looks like a cheap load, at alittle ove a gram per shot, 500g= 500 shots. there are some other powders but they are for the 32g loads for a 20bore, more of a "magnum" type cartridge. -enjoy, would you like to have a cost comparison done? Guest cookoff013
primers 3p (£30/k) gm3 £32.00 for 1000grams (1kg) thats 1000 shells. (£32/k) £40- wads and cards (may get them cheaper.) lead 25kg, ~£70 £170 / k, but you may get alittle stung with delivery. http://www.peterlawman.co.uk/shotshell.php -powder prices. express has special fibre 25 for £215/k, £45.00 saving ( is it worth it?) Guest cookoff013
I'd be looking to churn out say 250 at a time ? Would be interested to hear some pricing info Cookoff if you count the postage, you will be breaking even with any usual cartridge, in the rare instance this type of load actually looks slightly cheaper than cheap factory loads. as you buy the components to do 1000, then its wasting money to churn out just 250. here are some wads, 1000 for 24 euro`s (peanuts) but then their is shipping http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPat...products_id=478 http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPat...products_id=190 24kg of shot for 80 euro`s thats £70 (now 26-10-10) its about £15 delivery for wads, card, hulls etc. Edited October 26, 2010 by cookoff013
Guest cookoff013
http://www.siarm.com/product_info.php?cPat...;products_id=88 cheap-er but very high quality wad. 17.4 euro`s per 1000. save on powder cards too. that would knock £20 off per K. (traditional wads and card need an extra .5 grain of powder) how about that, it would even pay for the postage then, just source some lead and we`re done. (i know its not traditional wad, but just have a look.) Edited October 26, 2010 by cookoff013
Stealth Stalker
Gazza Sean down the social has now got his RFD & he looked into buying bulk, weren't a massive saving, but as you say cuts out the hassle factor. I reckon we'd easily get enough of the Herts posse to snap up the 27k carts he'd have to buy. I think from memory Hull were prepared to mix 6 different cart sizes on one pallet. Oh & as Alex says you may well be looking for another GF if you take up cartridge loading as well.
