So frustrating

Recommended Posts

What can i do?

I've been trying to get permission for 2 years now.

I went to see a farmer who has a field being hit everyday for the last two weeks,a red letter day for sure,so I went to go see him,I don't like to hassle farmers as they are always busy, and running a business myself I don't particularly enjoy the company of rep's who waste my time,I'd rather they got to the point and then we can deal from there.

Anyway I go see the farmer, poiltly introduce myself and as he's busy make reference to the field in question but not as my opening remark, ask him if I could shoot it,maybe just for a day see what he thinks.

The eyes go blank and he just says someone shoots his land, I thank him for his time and leave, half of me wants to ask where is the bloke for the last week while the pigeons eat his field and profit is? I drive past that area 2/3 times a day, never seen anyone decoying it.

Now I'm polite,well presented,not camo'd up.but still the brick wall.

There are a couple of lads around where I live who boast about all they permission they have, thousands of acres, but could never and don't effectivly shoot it.

now I don't think they should let me on the land by right but it's so frustrating to see oppertunity and can't get to it. They guard the permission like Fort Knox, what's the point of farmers giving permission to blokes a few years back who don't keep the pigeons down? one of the blokes I'm refering to has now had a baby with his wife and so he's never out by his own admission, but still keeps it to himself.

I generally shoot weekdays so I thought that would be better for farmers as they don't really want someone shooting all day on a sunday.

Do not give up asking there is always a chance you will get something.Today i was just chatting to a mate about shooting.A lady heard us and just mentioned she had a load of rabbits on her farm. Its not really a farm its only about twenty acres but i asked if it was possible to shoot on her land and she said anytime. She even said i could go lamping them if i wanted.Funny thing is i was fifteen miles from home and the farm is less then two miles from where i live.So keep asking you will get something in time. :whistling:

its a pain i have felt so many times mate. im lucky as i work on an 1000 estate and shoot another 3000. it has taken many years, favours and enquiring to get anywhere. one year i wrote a polite well scripted letter to every landowner in a 20mile radious and NOT one contacted me back allowing permission! keep at it mate and your chin up, have you tried taggin along with existing permission holders and doin favours??? also make sure you have BASC or similar insurance. unfortunately us shooter are a big gamble to the closed world of the affluent land owner, you cant blame them for being cautious about allowing strangers with gus on there land even if we have good intentions, good luck mate, keep smiling!!!!

cheers for the repies, eventually I'll get on one farm then hopefully I can prove that I'm reliable and safe,After 8 years living in the village people are beginning to get to know me and I might get a lucky break, thing is I'm part of a small syndicate with a small amount of land so I'm building experience and have got the time to keep trying.Iknow if I had land I'd be reluctant to let an unknown individual onto my land,I'm going to do 4 beating days locally soon and I hope to meet some contacts that way, I will just be polite and patient,my mate the other day just got his SGC and was chatting to a work colegue,it turns out that he has 100 acres and told him he could shoot it. that could happen for me,who knows

I sympathise, it is incredibly frustrating when you can see fields blue with pigeons but you can't get on them. But, as others have said, keep doing things the right way, being polite, making people aware that you are looking and it will come good. Perhaps it is worth approaching the farmer again, but just to leave your details in case he needs someone in the future. He may well have second thoughts when he sees the birds. Good luck!

I completely agree pal. This is by far the worst part of the sport. I have been trying to get permission for the last three years, going round knocking on doors and networking and the only piece of land that i have been able to secure was from someone off here that i had ton pay for as a pigeon shooting club. It was worth it as now at least i have a couple of fields i can go to to get out for the day.

I am sick and tired of the people around my area and on here that go on about how many thousands of acres they have permission to shoot over. The sport would be much better if the land was shared a bit. Theres no way that one man can effectively shooting over thousands of acres unless they do it as a full time job, and even then i think it would be a struggle. Its seems impossible for someone like me to get a good bit of land where i can go out decoying and learning the art of field craft. Thats why i keep on the clays, as without them i probably wouldnt shoot at all.

Good luck to you, i hope you have a bit more joy then me.

Stick at it and something will come along. I know what you mean about the ones with more land than they can shoot. Willie waving that they have 30,000+ acres. So what? What's the point in having permission that you can't cover.

I went back to see the farmer again as suggested,he was out but had a nice chat to his wife, she said they did have someone and she didn't think the old man would be interested but she'd put in a word for me,i thanked her,as I walk off the field below was full of corvids and the pigeons were in the field above,I thoought where is your guy now?I drove past today and not so much about, the birds have probably eaten it all now, still hoping to get a call

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally, today i went to the land that i'm a syndicate member of and there was nout about,i decided to drive around looking for rape fields as all the stuff on ours is wheat(i think) anyway I see a farm and think "sod it" so I pulled in and the farmer was there,I chatted to him,but got to the point quite quickly,he said that all his land is already sorted and he gets fed up with all the people that he has allowed fight over the land,i said I thought it was strange as it's not their land to fight over,he agree, asked me where I live and a few other questions and promptly said I could have 50 acres of rape if I wanted it,OVERJOYED.showed me where it was on the map and said go enjoy.HAPPY DAYS.

2 years I've been knocking on doors and finally, some of you with thousands of acres to spare may scoff but I'm chuffed.

well done mate, a right result, I got knocked back for years and years, I was persistent and eventually got about 50 acres like yourself, it went on and on from there, i kept going up and neighbouring farmers started asking me to clear their land for them, basically I got my first and the rest found me. in total now including one I got last week I probably have about 800 acres :) :)

Exactly the same here mate. There seems to be a few people who have accumulated vast amounts of land with permission to shoot and naturally cannot effectively do it. Nevertheless they are very possessive and rude. I have been knocking on farmers' doors for almost three years. Same story every time. It is frustrating.

I have found its part of the sport is getting the land...the people with loads of land have got it thru hard work and personally i dont begrudge that :good: ...hence why people without any land I have taken out to my two small permissions just so they can get out...I believe in Karma

I live at the back of a farm and asked him and he said no....even tho I shoot on the borders on his land already...just the way it goes...
