The Essex Hunter
was rough shooting today, just having a walk with the gun, but i was bolting pigeons and quite frequently missing on close fast birds anyone have this trouble any tips for hitting them Just take a second or to longer, give the choke (what ever you have) a chance to work, as the spread will be so tight and you will smash it to bits, so it will be no good any way. Also a snap shot might not be your thing? TEH
J black 1210
how close is close? anything less or around 10 to 15 yards, the closer they are the harder to judge lead i find. i had 1/2 choke in the gun, may have been successful with the 1/4... They wont need lead at that distance. Cyl choke wiould be better and leave them untill they are about 20yrds or so away

Greenhunter
As the bird flies out of the tree/bush it will probably be swooping down before flying back up. Its very easy to miss over the top if you shoot quickly. If there is time, before it goes from view, let it go a bit. As has been said, give the shot chance to spread. You might even have something worth picking up too! If you are thinking about lead in these circumstances you could be trying too hard. See it...shoot it is what its all about! tignme
Chokes all have same pattern out to 16 yds before opening out for spread so as above let the bird get out a little more.
Fisherman Mike
Theres an old saying that "you always miss behind" dont give the brd any lead and swing through with the gun
wymberley
Hi, Another old saying (there's always sense in them) is, "give it lore". Cheers
George1990
I keep reading this topic as "Fat birds rough when close" How true it is. I do quick snap shots at close birds. Normally does the trick.
THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
Fast & going away, could be going over the top as well as behind. Fast towards you, could be shooting too low as well as behind.
