Bennetts of Sheffield.

I have just heard that Bennetts of Sheffield, one of the biggest names in angling retail, has gone into receivership.

 

They have been around since forever.

really? Use to buy from them but the prices creeped up so use ebay and forums now

Can't believe it. I used to get a lot of my kit from them when i was a bit younger. They were a brilliant company.

I remember buying from them via mail order as a lad in the 70s. Sadly, their marketing material never moved out of that decade and, coupled with charging full RRP for everything on a dinosaur of a website they've succumbed to progress.

 

Change or die. In their case, die. Sad that it's a name from my childhood going but they really never smelled the coffee if you're honest.

shame that - i remember wearing out the catalogue making a decision on what i wanted for christmas as a boy - got my first piking kit from them.

They never recovered from being flooded out a couple of years ago. That and increased competition from Internet sellers has put paid to them.

I have spent hours and hours in there over the years and even more time reading the catalogues. It is a real shame that they are going under but they have had problems in their shop for years. The customer service at times was/is attrocious to the point where I have stood for 40mins at the desk waiting to be served. I think the mail order side of the business was superb though. One of the other problems with the place is the location, it is just too near an area where you find a lot of junkies that are more than happy to help releive them of some of the more expensive pieces of tackle.

Woah! me too Abu 506M and a Shakespeare Sigma Supra, 13ft carbon rod with a spliced fibreglass tip, that would be about 30 years ago, still got the rod but dont use it at all technology has come a long way since then, now use a Preston Innovations/Shimano GTM combo.
