HDAV
Popped into my local butcher today and while there asked about Game, they dont have a liscence for game but directed me to the fish mongers....SO I went in and they had a small selection of Game Oven ready pheasants few others, I asked about Rabbit as i enjoy rabbit when ever i have it but have never cooked it. FOr the First time in 5 or 6 years they have no Rabbit, their usual supplier (ferreter has let them down due to disease on his patch) SO If anyone has Rabbits to sell near Cardiff PM me for the details they may well have a load off you.... Back to topic I want free range British rabbit, not farmed Eastern European or Chinese rabbit what should I pay at a butchers/game dealers and anyone got any good recipes? If I thought i could get some permission I would go and try to bag a few a myself
al4x
£4.50 to £5 a rabbit if you buy it near me, once the guy who shot it gets £1 and you then have to skin it get it wrapped and put on a shelf and make some money it makes it a fair bit. Best option is seeing if anyone local can supply them direct
HDAV
Being still new to this I am happy to pay £4-£5 for a decent pot ready rabbit, If i had some permission I would happily shoot some for the pot, as i dont I'll happily pay the premium as i don't know what too look for etc and don't really have the facilities to prep from the hoof
John-B
shame you guys weren't closer or you could of had some off me, my freezer, my dads chest freezer and my mates freezer are full of them, I even think my ferrets are sick of eating them (we have to fight at the end of the night who is going to take the rabbits home lol) seriously looking at selling them on now, i don't know who is supplying my local butchers but in their windows they have the tiniest skinniest little rabbits I have ever seen selling for about a fiver each, my rabbits are easily twice the size of the ones he is selling... Colster
Sorry for the slight sidetrack but am I right in saying that you can only sell them to a butcher if they are still in fur? Otherwise you need a H&S thingy
vampire
My butcher will only take them during the game season and they have to be prepared, not in the fur

Do I need to register?” A: Not if you only supply local pubs and other catering establishments with in-fur or in-feather game on an occasional basis. If you do so on a regular basis or If you pluck, skin or further process any game for supply to the final consumer or to local retailers, then you will need to register the premises where you do this, even if it is your house. Hmm...Cardiff is a good 130 mile round trip so unless he wanted to pay decent amount(and i had a boot full..not likely.lol) then probably not economical. never mind, hope someone on here can help. time to get yourself an airgun and enjoy stalking your own bunnies..much more rewarding(and cheaper) than getting them from the butcher!
