woodcock1
Used the last of my floating days for the year and went for a look at the woodcock. Had a chance at two left and rights today, the first time I've had 2 chances in the one day. I got both pairs but had to dip into the reserve of the semi auto and use a 3rd shot the second time after I missed with the second barrel. Well pleased though. Rose a lot of birds in the five hours I was out. Picked another 3 good sporting shots one of which was a high driven style bird at about 35-40 yards. Here's the pic. with Bella looking rather tired. tweedledee
well done mate. is that a benelli? i got a text from CA today asking for a voluntary suspension of shooting ground nesting birds during the cold spell. anyone else get it??? bound to be hard for them to feed with the snow and frost
woodcock1
Hi all. Cracking day, one to remember for a long time. Im shooting on low ground at the minute about 100ft above sea level on rough pasture rushy fields whin bushes and thick hedges due to the freezing conditions. The key to success in my mind is to find unfrozen water where the soil is soft enough for the birds to feed all day and night. The edge of drains and streams with plenty of cover. Holly bushes are particularly good. Most places I rose woodcock today would normally be too wet to walk on where you'd be into muck to your knees. To answer a few questions, yes its a Benelli Woodcock and I'm shooting Eley olympics 7 1/2 through 1/4 choke. That's my 4th l+r, one in each of the last 4 years and missed a few as well. It would have been nice to get 2 in the 1 day though and I shouldn't have missed. That's my next goal now though. I also got the countryside alliance note on voluntary suspension of shooting and although most birds I rose today flew well and the shot ones are in good shape I feel that a few more days of this weather will start to affect them. The first birds that I have noticed affected are snipe as of the 20 or so that I rose today at least a dozen of the landed again after only a few yards. They get it really bad when the ground is frozen so deep. last year I witnessed them rising only to land on the fence posts to drop in again when I passed. I dont thing I'll shoot much more till this passes.

Sorry lots of questions! Thanks
woodcock1
Hi Kermitpwee, Its definitely the lightest semi auto I've ever held and probably the lightest 12g too. I also have a Ruger gold label sxs which weighs 6 1/2lb and It feels like a ton compared to the Benelli. They only come in 24" barrels . Forend feels great. I shoot everything with it including 3" magnum steel at 1380bar for geese right down to 24gm 9's at olympic skeet. It will however only properly cycle some brands of 24gm shells do to being inertia driven as opposed to gas. Very simple and easy cleanned though. Only 3 chokes supplied in cyl imp and mod. Would be nice to have one a little tighter as well though.

woodcock1
I cant be exactly sure as I got it on a trade in but I think it was about 1200. I traded a year old benelli supersport without any money either way. Ther's a second hand one in Novembers Irish shooters digest. Its in Stakelums rod and gun, Thurles.
