However, if you have a few then the habitat must suit them, so you should get visitors every year.
woodcock1
As said by Ollie woodcock feed almost exclusively on invertebrae like tiny worms larvae and other small insects. I doubt if any conventional feeds would be of interest. Habitat would be more important. Low fairly dense cover over damp areas or streams usually seem most attractive. Good luck with bagging a few. theprofessor
I shot a woodcock last year and then felt bad about it afterwards as it wasn't much of a meal. How rare are they? Should I leave them alone and just enjoy seeing the odd one?

Should I leave them alone and just enjoy seeing the odd one? It really depends what part of the country you are. I live in some good woodcock land; on our shoot on Saturday we probably flushed in the region of 20 birds. I would say in total I have flushed in excess of a hundred birds this winter so far. Most of the birds that we get in the UK & Ireland are migratory birds.
Winnyman
We saw our first two Woodcock of the year on Saturday, both were missed by the Guns. Mixed feelings on shooting them personally.
Ratsmasher
i was culling squirrels on a golf course on tuesday and over the afternoon flushed about 1/2 dozen, but as said shooting squirrels with air rifle so no shots there, not to mention dont know the season
wannabe_keeper
October 1st to January 31st in England Again, mixed feelings on shooting them. Yes they are farely rare but they are legal and you do feel a great sense of acheivement when you bag one of these elusive birds. Its just the hitting them thats the trouble! I don't think so; they may be rare in your part of the country but if they were rare throughout do you think they would still be on the quarry list? rimfire4969
We have more Woodcock than ever on our shoot, normally flushing about 20 per day. I have no problem shooting them , well aiming in their direction anyway and they are one of the finest eating birds there is.
triscrx
Started to see these alot more where I shoot. Very fast though and they camouflage in very well with the ground before they take off so a ****** to spot them. May try and bag a few in the future and see what the fuss is about eating them
