Colster
I have a Browning A Bolt, out of the box accuracy was impressive, lightweight and bolt has a fairly short throw. Also has adjustable trigger as standard. I'd second that, since the arrival of the X-Bolt the A-Bolt has been offered at some really good prices. I have one in .243 with a blued barrel but you can get stainless for a bit more money.

DaveK
My Howa is the dogs danglies. I think your choice will depend on how you want to use it. I assume with it being laminate thumbhole that it's the varmint version. They're damned heavy beasties and not really the best thing for carting round on your shoulder or shooting offhand. Otherwise a superb choice.

But I'll try and get round the gun dealers this coming week to get a bit of advice.
wallysmarksrn
ollie all the rifles mention are great. the one thing, to think about, is the weight. i have a T3,great rifle, would not change. by the time you put a mod, bipod,on it start's to add up,big time. when you are choosing your rifle, ask to try with different mod's on, in your price range. The thing is I don't know if I will have a MOD (I am thinking of putting a bit of extra money towards a scope). But I will go around the various dealers and check out the weight of each gun. I have received some great advice though .

Glensman
I wouldn't put a mod on a .223 at all, or even consider it! But as Wally said, you need to get it put on the ticket just in case...
Mr_Logic
Why wouldn't you put a mod on 223? I have one on mine and makes life much quieter, much nicer than without!!
bongo321
Ive just got a remmy 700 tactical 223, for reasons mentioned its proven , plenty of aftermarket mods you can upgrade with price was ok not a arm and leg for what wont get used everyday so i put that toward a better scope ie 6500 elite the pair for just over £1000 pretty good i think new ,so plenty left for a fancy stock albeit its a houge fitted , Its a tad heavy compared to a 22 but not madly but i can get my money back as scrap!? and as not a plinker im not going for a mod "got the slot" but the odd bang as its for fox is ok in fact nice to make a noise for a change atb with your search gerry ,

Mark based in Taunton Reply to Litlun999@googlemail.com Thanks for the offer but I have to apply yet and it'll probably take about 6-9 months by the time the PSNI get their act together. Lads I will apply for the mod, but I think it is pointless putting it on the gun as it is only gonna be used for fox, so how often would you get 2 shots at a fox even with a moderated gun (I hope it won't take 2 ) I just think I would rather put my money towards a decent scope or stock. Even with a mod it's still going to be loud, the bullet goes supersonic so it's going to crack a fair bit. However the mod does take out the initial bang which is a little kinder on your ears and will help stabilise the rifle by reducing muzzle flip. Trust me I know what a bang is after firing Glensman's .270 without a Mod , we now wear ear defenders since he put the mussel brake on
