Goat stalking

Hi all, has taken me a bit of time to get this up; I managed to wipe all the original shots on my camera and had to take a few pics in Glensman's garage. Anyway...

A couple of weeks ago myself and Glensman set off for a bit of goat stalking. I was on the gun this time as Glensman had taken a nice nanny goat on our last outing a month or so ago. The day we went there was still quite a bit of snow on the ground and the goats were difficult to find. Anyway we decided to go for a stalk through a wood to try and find them. It wasn't long before I picked up the tracks; in fact there were tracks and droppings everywhere so I knew there were goats about.

We stalked down through to the bottom of the wood without success and when we got to the bottom we decided we would stalk back along the top of the wood on the way back to the jeep. We were within about 100 yards of the jeep when Glensman spotted movement about 50 yards down the wood, sure enough there was a big billy goat standing on his hind legs eating shrubs. I slowly put the ear defenders on and rested the rifle on a branch, a thunderous bang echoed and the billy dropped on the spot. When I fired the rest of the herd appeared from the right hand side, so I passed the gun to Glensman who took a nice nanny goat as she trotted past him in the field about 50 yards away.

The next 2 pics show the size of the billy goat

The next pic shows that this billy was a good animal to cull, he had hardly a tooth left in his head and I am pretty sure and younger and fitter goat will be able to move in now.

The billy skinned and butchered, not bad saying it is only the 2nd animal of this size I have done

Thanks for looking :good:

Nice one mate. It will be interesting to hear what you and Glensman think of goats meat and how you cooked it to make it as tasty as possible!

The last nanny goat that was shot about a month or so ago went down well. We took a front & back leg each which was roasted & I must say it was as good if not better than lamb. The odds & ends and the loin got put into an "irish stew" which again was good. Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever shot a billy goat will know, it is quite impossible to cook these monsters, they are as tough as leather and don't smell great. But these goats need controlled and when you have 7 dogs a billy goat can cut down on the cost of feeding them for a few nights. :good:

well done shooting them and the fine style of butchering them :good:

Thanks mate, to be honest skinning is easy for me as I have done a bit of taxidermy, but butchery is new. I know most of the cuts of meat which helped so it wasn't too bad.

Im at work with a Ghurka, just shown him the pics of the goats  thats his favourite meat, makes great curry, now hes asking me,where he can get a goat,as he sits sharpening his Khukhuri :good::good: BB

Mate, not even your Ghurka would have ate this billy goat...he was that old it almost blunted my knife skinning the thing.

I dunno, the meat itself looked and felt just like meat from the butcher... But i'd let someone else try it first!

It's def good enough for the dogs, they're going clean mad for the goat meat!
