well as the title states im a beginner, a complete beginner as i havent even got a rifle yet. i have been glued to this forum for the past 24 hours reading tons of posts while i was waiting for my account to be activated lol. anyway i live in stoke well newcastle under lyme and was wondering about local gun clubs as id like to find one before i go spending money bearing in mind i dont have the means to travel far. i have read about north staffs shooting club and was wondering if any of you have any info on this place. second thing i have been looking at lots of air rifles, ive decided to spend around £250. i have seen a video on youtube of it in use and it just seems so fluent with a very large bolt. in terms of hunting its not something i want to do until im an established shooter so finding permission isnt something im looking into yet. any advice would be greatly appreciated

btw im right handed but if i was to hold a rifle i would hold i left handed im the same with a snooker que i must be left eye dominant

what do you guys think of Co2 rifles????

Rifle shooting you only use one eye so it doesnt matter which is dom, if your right eye is weaker I would suggest you learn to shoot left handed. There is a more limited choice of L/H air rifles (left hand in general) but quite a few are ambidextrous/straight stocked.

HAve a look at Weirhauch (sp?) HW95

Secondhand springer to start off with buy a good one and you wont loose money on it if you decide to upgrade to a PCP after a few months/years.

BSA/Weihrauch/Air Arms

Will you be shooting targets, FT/HFT or vermin?

My choice for your budget would be: http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/101013172708008 or http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/101125152916001 (I have a HW95 which is as good as when i bought it 15 years ago!) Couldn't afford a TX200 at the time but my uncle has one and it's the gun i would buy now.

See the links above, get a good springer learn how to use it then if you do go PCP you should be able to trade it in/sell it for near what you paid. IF you are going for vermin .22 hits harder, .177 shoots flatter over range and is standard for competition targets IIRC best thing is find a local club go along and i bet there will be 10+ people willing to let you use their gun to have a go (also great palce to grab a bargain after someone splurged on a Xmas pressie!) where are you?

I like your attitude Jon - not hunting until you are happy you are accurate and consistent enough to be humane. This is a very good thing :good:

I too would lean towards a decent springer for a newby shooter to start and learn with.

It teaches you more than a recoilles pcp ever could as you learn to handle recoil.

A light hold, supporting the rifle and allowing it to to do its job I found is the best way to view it. A tight grip on a springer will cause inaccuracy and so you learn just to be that 'stable platform'.

It would be hard to go wrong with a BSA Supersport, or any of the Weihrauch springers (old fave was the 95K for me) or AirArms springers for that matter.

I suggest holding a few, see what feels comfortable in the shoulder and natural.

Good luck with your new hobby.

I would recomend that you save until a PCP comes within your price range-i,m not going to go down the "PCP,s are more accurate" route cos that will just open up a whole new can of worms.I will ,however, state that a PCP is EASIER to shoot accuratly and will get you more succes in the early days and boost your confidence. If you keep your eyes out for an Air Arms S200 with a tank you should,nt be to far short with the funds at your disposal and you wont lose much money when you sell it on-they are also ambidextrous (despite what many ads on guntrader might indicate) so you can shoot whichever way you feel is best.Added to this they are dammed accurate and you will need to spend a whole heap of money to outshoot them by any large margin-in fact i,m willing to wager that in the time you own it you will never be capable of using its full potential.Try as many as you can and dont be rushed into anything-but my advice is defo hang out for the PCP.Good luck and keep us posted.

I personally would go for a decent springer like a HW95K (cracking gun) then all you need is gun, scope and pellets. I went for a springer agian because I think it offers more of a challenge to use therefore adding a little fun, but thats me

The S400 is a superb rifle but you'll need the extra cash to buy a scope, mounts, silencer and of course the charging unit, whether being a pump or charging bottle. With all this it probably doubles your budget amount!

I think with your budget for now, it be better for you to buy a quality spring rifle like a Weihrauch HW80,HW97 or HW98!
