Shotgunny
Heard a story today that pigeons don't decoy well or at all in the rain? Is this true as it's lashing here now and I'm meant to be out tommorrow atb sg
southeastpete
i have no experience at all, but i have heard about decoys needing to be made so they don't have any 'shine' when wet. So i'd guess they must be used in some rain. I'd guess (as said not from experience so just a guess) that it would depend on how much rain. UKPoacher
Pigeons have to eat every day and will decoy in the rain albeit for short periods. Keeping your deeks looking realistic will be your biggest problem as they tend to shine when wet. It won't be comfortable at this time of year and I've long since given up decoying in the rain even with a pop up hide keeping me dry. Mungler
If it's raining you will find that there is nothing flying in the sky. You can sit it out and wait for a break in the weather because then everything that has been "grounded" wants to get up and about. However, my experience of trying to decoy anything actually in the rain is that it's generally a waste of time.
wymberley
Yep, by and large it's true. Showers are different in as much as although they'll leg it while it's actually raining and if you also go for cover as soon as you think it's easing off, get back as You can bet they'll be there before you. Yep! And the gun needs cleaning and drying off, the dog needs a bath, cartridges need putting somewhere to dry to stop the brass rusting. Not a happy situation. proTOM1
Ive had mixed days in the rain but never done much good this time year in the rain . Was out today with another member and we shot 25 on the rape in the rain but they did not come untill it stopped and as soon as it started again it went dead till the next dry window Still good fun and better than being in doors
Mightymariner
Out today in the rain, pigeons stopped like a switch was flicked when it poured down, as soon as you see them moving again you can be sure the rain will stop.

Mightymariner
How did you get on mate ? Awful! Went to some rape next to a cover crop, didn't fire a shot, birds came in high and wide dropping into the maize way beyond me. Mind you, have it all set for end of the season! Packed up after a couple of hours, and went to another rape field, which had plenty on. Tricky as bordered by two roads and obviously birds were next to the road! Gave it a couple of hours and shot one. Mind you, I was absolutely freezing in the wind. Keeper kindly stuck up some rope bangers in nearby fields which kept them moving but not near me. Will try it again soon, perhaps when I have a rotary..

ditchman
Heard a story today that pigeons don't decoy well or at all in the rain? Is this true as it's lashing here now and I'm meant to be out tommorrow atb sg never shot pigeons in the cold weather in the rain , always found it to be a total waste of time ....however !!!!!!...was out with a mate in the height of summer , one of those hot sultry close days, and we were cooling off in a wood, brushing the flies away, when it decided to start to thunder and lightning and really chuck it down.......then i reckon every single pigeon in the area headed for the wood...well i tell you now my barrells were steaming it was all bang bang relode bang bang relode ...you get the idea !! i was shot out in 15 mins and nothing you could do could put the birds off...we were soaked thro and then it stopped raining and lightning the wood went quiet and steam came up off the leaf litter ....it looked like something out of apocolyipse now in Namm...............never repeated this but have always wondered about going out and watching the weather to see if we could do it again... I am in the south hams Devon, we get a fair bit of rain here! I use flocked half shells, they done reflect the rain, as for birds feeding or not, they have to feed everyday and as such I've had some good days rain or not. If it's chucking it down then maybe I won't be there!
