MARK 1
hi guy's ,had a bad un today. took the father in law's sringer cross to be put to sleep, not a task i had been looking forward to but as he had got her from being 7 weeks old & now her being 17 he could not bring him self to take her. i've not lost a dog yet but the way i felt when she passed i'm sure it would be twice as bad if it was my own. amazing really how we give our dog's hell in the field yet when they go how upset you get. one thing's for sure they truely are a man's best friend. god bless TRUDIE AND GOODNIGHT. a tribute to an amazing gundog. new to the flock
MARK1 The grief we feel for the passing of our pets is no less than the grief we feel for the passing of our faimly members and friends. In many instances more. At 17 she led a long life, with many hours spent in the field under the gun, doing what she was bred and lived to do. I have always felt that it is a major injustice that our dogs don't live as long as we do. Now is the time to remember her achivements in the field, her first flush, first retrieve, cherish these memories as they will bring you warmth in the months and years ahead. And when your father in law is ready in a couple of months go with him to pick a new pup or maybe two. NTTF

red_stag88
I had a big black lab when i was very young, he was put to sleep last year, he has his own little place in the garden. You mush only kepp the dog alive for its self, not you, at 17 she lived a long life, you did the right thing,.
brain dead
yep, i know how everyone feels, i lost a sheep dog the same week as red stagg and it was extremely sad, the year i was born my dad aquired her.when i was younger she was so protective of me and my brother that she wouldn't let my gran put a jacket on me!in the end she started losing her hearing but she was probs the ,ost loyal dog our family will ever have, she'd been hit by lorries ran over by tractors, kicked by horses and suffered strokes but still was just as active as she had been when she was younger.she passed away in the field where she spent most of her life, it was sad but we were happy she died where she loved it and we didn't have to make the decision of putting her down
everygoodnamewastaken
My Grampa had a stroke when i was a young child. My parents got him a black lab to get him out of the house and for some company. He had cancer and was put down at the age of 17. If we hadnt got him i gather my grampa would have withered away in his chair. I still really miss him (the dog, Brandy) Brandy wasnt taught to the gun but my dad took him out once and he brought back a pigeon without being told to. Great things dog's, cant wait till i get a brandy of my own. Sorry to hear about Trudie
rjimmer
The chances are that any old dog has been to the vet's in the past and they don't like it. I always think it is best to do the job yourself in an environment that the dog does not feel afraid of. I often cry while doing it but the dog has no bad memories. Hubertus
its a very hard thing to loose a friend. I can feel with you! Try to think about the good life the dog had. 17 years is unbeliveable old. You can be very happy aobut that. Best wishes and head up, Hubertus

hunterswind9465
I to have to face the loss of one of my best dogs she has lost the use of her legs and will have to be put down after the weekend. Anyone who new Meg will know she was a great dog and served me well when I was the head keeper on Menie Estate. Best known for never giving up on a duck retreve and wiping the eye of 3 FTCH,S on a mallard one night on the Goose pool. Her sister Willow Wamda was a FTCH and in the right hands she would have been the same. A daughter is now working with Laurance Edwards on Ladymire Estate and shows the same qualitys. Her memory will live on with all who shot over her.

MARK 1
young fella we all know how you feel,as i said in the origanal thraed it's the worst thing apart from losing a member of your family that can happen. the best thing i did for the father in law was to go out and buy him a 8 week old liver & white pup ,it cheered him up no end. even though you can never forget the loss of a dog mate just try & think of the good times you had. all the best young fella & good luck with your search for a new pup
