Last day of the season

I didn't get time to put this up at the weekend. We were on the syndicate for the final day at the season and trying our best to get the percentage up a bit. Well the day always starts with a small valley which always holds woodcock, usually two men walk it and whoever is left stands forward. Sure enough the valley yielded 4 woodcock. The next part of the shoot is on the outskirts and we haven't saw many birds on it this year, but I managed to bag a hen as soon as we walked in, this was quickly followed by another woodcock falling to my Beretta.

As we got to the end of this beat I hit a hen, I thought I had only pricked her, however, she landed very quickly in very heavy cover so I took off in pursuit but as I got to where I thought she was I flushed a cock pheasant which my mate bagged; sure enough 20 yards on the hen I fired at was found stone dead.

The next couple of areas proved unsuccessful apart from a grey crow falling again to the beretta :D . As we approached the main part of the shoot Dawn (my springer flushed 2 hens), as I had already shot 2 pheasants I let the first go forward and took the 2nd hen, this was now 4 in the bag and Dawn quickly retrieved it and returned to where she had flushed the last 2 and 2 more flushed but 1 was missed and the other escaped without a shot. I flushed another hen about 50 yards on and also shot another cock pheasant. Then my mate bagged a woodie. That was the end of the sport for the day, I had a particularly good day firing 6 shots and having 6 kills (4 pheasants, 1 woodcock & 1 grey crow). That's the end of another season and an enjoyable 1 it was. Below is the picture of the final bag (5 pheasants, 5 woodcock, 1 pigeon and 1 grey crow not in picture).

Notice the woodcock in the very top left of the picture, it was the one I shot, I have never seen as big or as heavy a woodcock in my life, when we put it beside the pigeon it was more or less the same size.
