northy
Sent application off, had the interview – been told I can have them just waiting for my fire arms licence to arrive in the post. I need advice on bolt action or semi automatic .17hmr, and .22lr – I’ve heard bad things about the semi autos constantly jamming, but don’t know if it’s true Thanks

SilentKill
You can't get a 17hmr Semi auto rimfire. As Gary says , no .17hmr semi auto! Well not in the UK anyway!

Grandalf
If you haven't done much rifle shooting before - get a bolt action. You have to make every shot count. Semi-auto's tempt you to blaze away as the target runs away. A SA later enables you to get two or three rabbits before they realise they are under threat. Paddy Galore!
some s/a guns are better than others, i've had a few, the best i've had were an anschutz and a browning buckmark, these seem to handle subs with no problems. 17hmr is only available in bolt action here in the uk. 12borejimbo
Go for both in bolt action, cant go wrong, especially if they are your first rifles, nice and simple, let alone more accurate. The last thing you want is to complicate matters and get frustrated with grouping and jammings, if you get them.
gaz-loc
i got a bolt action CZ 17hmr american varmint model (prooved to be a brilliant peice of kit) from my local rfd. he sourced it from edgar brothers and i sent my gaurantee slip off to edgar brothers who then sent me an email, after obviousy seeing id purchased a 17HMR, saying that due to recent proofing issues DO NOT USE 17HMR AMMUNITION IN S/A RIFLE. so.....
