Not bad, alot of fowlers will go half a life time before bagging a foreshore shoveller.

had a bit of a panic when I first saw the photo and thought you had got a cock pintail on your first flight !!

Very well done, hopefully the first of many successful flights, the finest sport there is.

I was very kindly taken out foreshore wildfowling yesterday.

Up at 4:00am, it rained a lot, I had a great time

Got a Mallard and Shoveler. I'm told eating the shoveler will teach me not to shoot one again.

Can anything be done with them?

.

Recipe!

If you pluck and clean the shoveller, smother it in a garlic and chive marinade and put it on the top shelf of the oven at about 180 for 3 hours (foil off for the last 20 mins) and put an old leather shoe, well worn with the same marinade in a tray on the bottom shelf for the same amount of time, let them both rest for 15 mins before serving, you will be hard pushed to decide which tastes best :good:

Best avoided

I must admit I'm loathed to just bin him.

Any particular chutney?

well my mother inlaw makes home made chutney of different kinds....

but i have 3 that i stick too

1)mango ......

2)cheese fondue with tomato.....

3)trmarind ....

also they are very good with rabbit , pheasant , partridge ..

no 3 is very good , i only use them on wigeon , pintail , tufty, shovler , because it takes the earthy taste out of the meat ...

i put it in the bags with meat and leave them in the fridge for a couple of days then freeze them and take them out when needed .... :good:

Well done and congratulations, sounds like you may have got the bug! Some friends I shoot with bagged 2 shovellers on flooded freshwater marsh this season, but I never found out who took them home and ate them. I always wondered what the taste would be. We have shot tufties on there before which have tasted fine, despite having a bad reputation, I am just curious as to whether the shovellers would taste better if they weren't shot on the shore, but had been on freshwater marshland?
