Try PEEK polish or Belgom Alu if a silver cloth is not enough, they are less abrasive and leave a protective sheen, you can get them on the 'net - PEEK is cheaper. If you're rubbing the metal lightly, you're doing it wrong. Not used it on a gun action. Polished all brass bits up lovely on a Air Rifle. Eveyone one has various ideas so you will have to see which one works for you.
