Symes
A few of us were out decoying yesterday, plenty of birds about, but just could'nt get them to come in to the decoys on a regular basis!! Anybody any ideas?? Decoying with 10 full bodied flocked, 10 half shell flocked on spring sticks, 1 bouncer and later on tried a magnet and a pecker, but still no joy!! henry d
Just plug on,and when things don`t go as planned try something different. Leave all your gear(minus guns and carts)and go for a drive to a hill where you can see all around the area and see what is happening with the flightlines. Then go back and digest the info or move. Symes
Thought that may have been the case, but you never know!!
Browning GTS
As henry, just go and find a flightline. You wont get so many, but you will get better sport. Most of my shooting is flightline.
sussex
I find I get more Pigeons when there are More Guns in the area that Im shooting You can sort of play a game of tennis with them bouncing them from one feild to another . There is also the other Issue of was there another feild nearby with better feeding potential ( Freshly Sown ) also camo and hides can play a big part I had alot of trouble bringing Birds down to My decoys until I bought a Face Veil
Stealth Stalker
Symes Had you done a proper reccy, flightlines in to the field, times they're feeding what part of the field they want to be on? After all that if the weather isn't favourable you could be fighting a losing battle. If you were decoying over rape it helps to set a few mates up half a mile or so apart to ping pong them around. Don't let them settle in another field. That would only draw all the flightlines to that area. Keep at em. Good Luck SS
Catamong
Symes, SS is dead right, you were probably trying to draw them onto a part of a field that they weren't used to feeding on. A proper recce is so important - you can only be 50 - 100 yards out in your hide position to turn a potentially good day into a duffer, or vice versa. The other possibility is that the field had been "Over Shot", had others been there very recently, if so the birds can be very nervous..?? Cat. invector
The one thing you SHOULD have learned from this experience is where the pigeons actually went.
neilbe2
ive had a few days like that recently, loads of pigeons but no interest. but were im going there's about 50 acre of rape so they just fly off and eat further upfield....thats pigeon shooting for you! Symes
Sounds like a combination of weather and 'overshooting'. When we turned up the field had 300-400 feeding!! Got of to a good start with a few decoying in, then the weather set in which turned them off, along with them then being a bit jumpy. All part of the learning curve. Tight Barrels
Wind is always a help (possibly even essential at this time of year) otherwise they spend all their time in trees. They seem to be flying very high (in Sussex) in large groups at the moment.
the hitman
This time of year can be very frustrating, more people out since the game season finished, birds still flocked up (as they are in my patch). Try roosting until the drillings start at least you wont spend hours chasing them. I have givin it a miss for the last two weeks, but the seed drill will be a welcome sight. Guest konings
IF THERE A LOT OF PIGEONS IN THAT AREA AND THEY DONT WILL COME INTO THE DECOYS YOU SETTING,, CAN THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOU HAVE NOT A GOOD HIDE OR A GOOD CAMMO FOR YOUR SELF,AND MAYBE THE PIGEONS SEE YOU AT THE HIDE AND FLO AWAY ITS VERY POSSEBLE. Symes
Hi. The hide side of things is fine, as they are flying over or in, and then spooking once we pop up to shoot. This would suggest we're not been seen as they fly in or over. But every possibility has to be covered!! Some were even flying in and landing in the trees above us!!
