get an over and under 28" barrels 1/4 and 1/2 chokes or multi if you can find it. At that budget buy a second hand decent make possibly a lanber or bettinsoli as I think the Berrettas will be slightly out of budget but look about you may find one

Is there much difference between a brand new lamber sporting deluxe for £800 or a few year old one for £400?

Any changes that would make it better to buy a newer?

Asking as i hopefully will be have the same dilemma soon myself

thanks pal, but i have read up on Bettinsoli, and heard they had problems with double discharge

I don't know why but few seem to tell about their problems with guns so hard to tell what guns do have problems and what ones don't, Browning and Baretta seem highly regarded but are they really as good as people say, who knows apart from the gun smith's, Guns seem a little bit like cars in that people somehow feel afraid to tell the world they have brought a dud one, so he who advertises most wins and most people remain faithfull to the same make

I would say look for a Miroku Winchester Franchi or Lanber at that budget but dont rush into buying one most grounds will loan you a gun and most shooters will let you have a go with theirs. Also learn what to look for and how a gun should fit you.

My mate just bought a new Pointer (about £550 I think) and it double discharged, got it repaired, and it did it again.

Same as the Webley & Scott (made in turkey by Akkar?) I think they are sold as few other minor brands (gun shops own) and pretty ropey quality.

The lanber sporting delusx gets good reviews. Miruko's are also a good gun, not sure what the second hand value of them is though, could well be worth looking on guntrader for a idea on prices.

Don't though just buy the first gun you come across as you might regret the discision. Find a gun shop that is interested in finding the right gun for you and not one that picks up any gun and says it will do, or take another experianced shooter or instructor with you.

What type of gun are you looking for mate??? Semi, O/U, S/S???

What type of shooting will the gun be used for???

You could get a Escort Magnum semi for under £400 brand new, with a 3 year guarantee, 5 chokes. Great gun for rough shooting.

But it's up to you what type of gun you want.

I'm just starting off with a s/h Rizzini 12g O/U 28" £365 from my local RFD,

and next week we're trying another one but in 20g for my wife and 10yr old son to use.

In all the time I have been shooting I can't recall anyone slagging off a Lanber. You can get a VGC used Sporting Delux (or a Gold Deluxe) for about £500-550. If that was my budget that is what I would go for rather than scraping the bottom of the barrel to get an ancient and battered Beretta.

yeah i've heard a lot of good reports on Lanbers, but, i just cant seem to find any in good nick in my area, which is a real shame :(

any in my local gun dealers, are all battered and in poor condition

Hi everyone i just got set up with the pointer 612 and it did the same to me, being new to shooting this has dented my confidence. (Wouldn't mind it fired off both barrels and i still missed.) Gun shop said bring it in and they'll sort out it out, i'm left thinking will it happen agin, how can you confidently fire a shotgun whilst worrying about the barrels splitting open?

Personally I would reject it, with a factory loads modern barrels wont split unless obstructed, badly damaged (dented etc) and with 21-28g clay loads unlikely to fracture a modern barrel still not something you want to happen.

Double discharges (never had one) are dangerous and likely to put you off shooting. £5-600 buys you an older Miroku, Lanber etc but much better long term relaibility. add a bit more and get a Beretta or Browning much better made and easily repaired when needed (not normally before 100,000+ carts unless abused!) BTW Browning Medallist isn't a Browning look for a 325/425/525/GTi or beretta 68X series

is what i would be looking at

I see no reason a new gun should have an issue out of the box other than poor quality control.....
