garyb
The BFG's are harder wearing
al4x
yep I think the bfg's wear better which also seems to mean being possibly a harder compound that the mpg is slightly better than the AT2's, I also think they are slightly better off road and I've now got a set of AT2's on. Cost wise however they can be substantially more

picardy
Hi just been through same situation bfg ats or grabbers just orderd mine for saturday morning and ive gone for the bfg as i think you get what you pay for and seem a harder wearing tyre which will last longer just my two pence worth mate but its all down to you
blindeye
i got a set of at2 , the old style ones , but i have had to get another set of insa turbo special tracks as got stuck a few times ,but thats not the fault of the tyre as i was expecting too much from it ,but as a all round a/t tyre i would stick with the at2 .your just paying for the name on BFG's . gixer1
As 85% of my driving is on tarmac and the old disco can fairly shift I prefer the softer compound of the at2, looked at the reviews and they showed better On road grip with at2's.... How much offroad do you do and are you likely to need the grip more on a road at 70mph or a field at 10mph?? As long as a tyre keeps me on the road in the right direction I am happy, tyre wear is a secondary concern!!! JonnyR
How much extra wear are we talking about. I have done 25K miles with my AT2's on my 2.5 tonne Touareg and they are still looking very good. cheers,
al4x
realistically most people that drive a 4x4 don't drive it like they stole it, if you do you get unfortunate things like rocks breaking bumpers never had a problem with BFG's grip wise on road and I've had 3 sets now rather than read a few reviews, I went with AT2's this time as they were raved about and they are ok certainly cheaper and are lasting well but they aren't as good off road. As a guide I used to get at least 60K to a set of BFG AT's which really means the cost per mile is pretty low so far after about 7K with the AT2's they look pretty good. Where they are different is the shoulder isn't as angular and the tread doesn't clear mud as well which is the main issue with them. Generally you will be fine off road as long as you don't go silly though. For £20 a tyre extra I would go BFG's every time, shame with mine it was £40 a tyre more

al4x
I've not been stuck unlike some in their discos, but having had the different tyres on the same vehicle type I feel able to comment one is better than the other Just because you wouldn't take your disco anywhere likely to get dirty or scratched doesn't mean we're all the same. I could go out tomorrow and buy 4 of them if I really felt like it but I prefer the shrewd buy for cheap motoring and one that keeps the dog and foxes out of the cabin. Now the tyre that BFG stopped producing the Trac Edge was awesome much better off road and definitely between AT and muds on my old L200 they were very good and a real shame they stopped making them. gixer1
Alex, the disco's do get dirty/offroad every now and then! Just not a good idea with road tyres and clay based fields! Edited March 16, 2011 by gixer1
al4x
the other thing I'm not convinced about is whether the AT2's are as good on icy winter roads. Mine were ok but not good on them despite having the S rating
gixer1
the other thing I'm not convinced about is whether the AT2's are as good on icy winter roads. Mine were ok but not good on them despite having the S rating have to say that surprises me as watched one of my friends pull a fully laden car trailer through deep snow with them and my other friend has them on an L200 and he seemed to get on fine, although on ice (no snow) he did have one mishap! which opened the L200 up like a tin of beans! i was actually surprised at the grip when you hit the brakes on icy roads as when i first got the AT2's fitted i gave them a few test tries to see how the braking was (as Discos are quite a heavy ****** to stop) regards, Gixer
al4x
I'm not saying they are bad just possibly not quite as good, its hard to quantify and on snow they were fine, it is just really icy roads they didn't seem quite as good. Bearing in mind you drive an L200 in 2wd in most conditions it did feel this year I used 4x4 more than previous bad weather. That said most of the time they were pretty predictable
chrispti
Bfgs are also triple ply lined, grabbers are only double, giving stronger tyre walls, helpfull if you air your tyres down a bit for off roading.
bigbird2
Thanks for that guys ..mixed opinions but i think i may well go for the at2`s as im a skin flint !! lol
gixer1
Big bird, The AT2's will be fine, they are one of the most popular AT tyres on the market (look at all the people struggling to get them!) the BFG's are probably just as good but i think the differences would be hard to spot in reality... I don't think i can remember ever letting air out of my tyres to go offroading (and you could probably say i go "off road" of sorts every day.... it's kind of splitting hairs i think as they are both perfectly acceptable for what they are intended... (don't get the white writing on the AT2's though...it looks a bit gay! ) Regards, Gixer
JonnyR
I think LR are now fitting AT2s as their factory fit offroad tyre to Defenders now. Not sure if this is a recommendation or not, being a VW driver!

figgy
Its recommended to reduce air pressure down to 16 psi in mud to get better mud tread cleaning with the at2 tyres. Theese tyres were developed to cope with not just mud but wet and ice and snowy road conditions hence the softer compound and the holes to take ice studs on the shoulder treads. Quick search of google should give you all the info and more than you need to make a choice on either. I picked at2 never looked back price was never a concern when it comes to tyres.
